After a mere three years, one alternate version of The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall is about to be delisted forever. Rebuilt with Unity and combined with a number of community-made mods, while we wait for news on Elder Scrolls 6 and a full sequel to Skyrim, this underloved edition of one of the great RPGs of the ’90s is about to vanish, for good. You’ll still be able to get Daggerfall, and its free Unity-driven reimagining, but the specialist GOG version is done for.
The original Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall Unity project was started over a decade ago and recreated the classic title in Unity, adding a heap of quality-of-life features and improved graphics and visuals to make the game more palatable for a modern audience. The GOG Cut, released in 2022 under the Daggerfall Unity banner, saw content creator ‘GamerZakh’ go one step further, enhancing the edition with select mods, settings, and homebrew improvements that not only made Daggerfall look better, but more fun to play too. The GOG Cut edition included the ability to pet animals (a must-have for all RPGs in my opinion), customizable loading screens, and a bestiary, alongside a bunch of other welcome refinements. It really was the definitive edition of Daggerfall.
However, according to GOG’s moderators, this edition is now “outdated and no longer fulfills its purpose of providing a hassle-free modded experience to the game.” GOG says that it is “working on a solution that will allow it to publish and maintain such projects better in the future,” but in the meantime, Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall Unity GOG Cut will officially disappear from stores on Wednesday, February 12 at 2pm UTC (6am PST / 9am EST / 2pm GMT / 3pm CEST.
It’s not all bad news, though. Those who already own this edition of Daggerfall can continue to play it from their library – you just won’t be able to buy it once it’s delisted. If you’re eager to play Daggerfall, you can still download the original from Steam, or for a more modern version, pick up the reimagined Daggerfall Unity for free. There are a bunch of mods for the latter on Nexus, so you can still benefit from enhancements and improvements. It requires a bit more legwork, but may make the wait for the Elder Scrolls 6 release date a bit easier.
