The God of War franchise has seen an explosive resurgence in recent years thanks to the widespread popularity of the Norse duology of games. 2018’s God of War, 2022’s God of War Ragnarok, and the 2023 Valhalla DLC have all received critical acclaim for both their gameplay and the heartfelt story between Kratos and his son Atreus. This newfound success and popularity have led Sony and Santa Monica Studio to work on numerous new projects either featuring Kratos and Atreus as cameos or working on entirely new games. While rumors of remakes of the original God of War games and an Atreus-led sequel persist, new rumors of an Egypt-set game have emerged, suggesting Sony may adapt the 2021 comic God of War: Fallen God.

God of War: Fallen God Explained
Published by Dark Horse Comics, written by Chris Roberson, and illustrated by Tony Parker and Dave Rapoza, God of War: Fallen God is a four-issue tie-in comic series with 2018’s God of War and God of War Ragnarok. Set following Kratos’ extermination of the Greek pantheon as seen in God of War 3, Fallen God follows the Ghost of Sparta as he attempts to abandon the Blades of Chaos and abscond from Greece into Ancient Egypt. Here, Kratos walked across Egypt’s arid landscapes for months until he came upon the ghost of Athena once again. Athena urged him to return to his Greek homeland and confront his destiny, but Kratos refused. Instead, he continued exploring Egypt until he came upon a village that welcomed Kratos as their savior.
Suddenly, a gigantic crocodile-like creature known as the Chaos Beast attacked the village. Kratos confronts the beast with just his fists and ends up ripping the beast’s top jaw off its head. However, just as the villagers emerge to view Kratos’ actions, a titanic, shelled, hippo-like beast appears from a nearby lake. Kratos attempts to attack it with his fists again but is quickly knocked out and confronted by Athena and the Egyptian god of magic, wisdom, writing, and the moon, Thoth. The two urge Kratos to confront his destiny and, after a brief debate, Kratos awakens with his Chaos Blades in hand and slays the hippo-like beast. Thoth informs Kratos that he has fulfilled his destiny and wishes him good fortune on his fate away from Egypt.
The Potential of a God of War Egypt Prequel Game
Since 2018’s God of War, the concept of Kratos interacting with Egyptian mythology has been teased repeatedly. In Tyr’s vault, Kratos, Atreus, and Mimir encounter some Egyptian artifacts, with Mimir stating they come from a great desert land filled with many gods. Later, the trio encounters a panel from Tyr’s shrine, further depicting Tyr traveling to Egyptian, Japanese Shinto, and Celtic pantheons. In God of War Ragnarok, fewer references to Egypt appear, but in the Valhalla DLC, Tyr does appear wielding a traditional Egyptian khopesh sword. While the Egyptian God of War game rumor only claims that Sony is casting Middle Eastern actors for a supposed God of War game focused on Egyptian mythology, there is still a lot of potential for and room for expansion in an Egypt-set God of War title.
If this game does turn out to be a prequel adapting certain aspects of Fallen God, it could expand upon the comic’s events and help bridge the events of Kratos’ Greek saga with the Norse duology. Santa Monica Studio could even bring back an older Terrence C. Carson to reprise his role as Kratos to further highlight the Ghost of Spartan’s transition into the god seen in 2018’s God of War. While the huge crocodile and hippo creatures could return as bosses throughout the game, Santa Monica Studio could easily populate the land with more Egyptian monsters to bother Kratos, such as griffins, mummies, and the giant chaos serpent Apep. This game could further explain how Kratos was able to distance himself from the Blades of Chaos.
The Expanded Story of a God of War Egypt Prequel Game
In terms of a story, this God of War prequel title could pick up where God of War 3 left off, with Greece in chaos and a wounded Kratos limping away unsure of what he should do with life now that he has achieved his revenge. Once Kratos arrives in Egypt from the Mediterranean Sea, he could still be confronted by Thoth multiple times and eventually grudgingly accepts to help him defeat some beasts controlled by maniacal gods. It could even have Kratos venture to Egypt’s many afterlife realms, such as Aaru, Aten, Duat, and Heb Sed. Thoth could beseech him to use his godly powers for good, but Kratos would refuse by the end of the game, instead searching for a place where he could live in exile.
