We’re heading back toward Pandora this year for Borderlands 4. The long-awaited sequel has been in the works for six years, and vault hunting will see some changes for this installment. Besides a new setting in the nearby planet of Kairos, there’ll be fresh tools and weapons to make gathering loot that much easier. Now, we know exactly when we’ll be able to load up and start shooting.

Borderlands 4 will be ambitious, even by Gearbox’s standards. The FPS game is introducing several new mechanics to the franchise, from a grappling hook to make getting around that much more chaotic, to the removal of loading screens for a fully immersive experience. These come on top of the planet Kairos, where much of the action takes place, since Lilith accidental damaged it by moving the moon Elpis.

But besides these additions, there’ll be plenty of what you’ve come to expect from the looter shooter: loads of explosive encounters through varying locations in the name of treasure. The Timekeeper and his robotic army are the central enemies this go around, for yourself and any Vault Hunters you join up with in the co-op game. We previously knew we’d be playing the upcoming PC game this year, and Gearbox has just revealed the exact Borderlands 4 release date.

Borderlands 4 arrives on Tuesday, September 23, 2025. This comes from the lips of Randy Pitchford himself, during a PlayStation State of Play presentation. The space game is getting its own State of Play livestream soon, revealing more details beyond what we currently know to keep everyone enticed while we wait until September.

Borderlands 4 looks like it’ll continue to build on the strengths of the previous installments. There’s a loud, brash sense of humor and visual style, punctuated by punchy gunplay and lots and lots and lots of multi-colored treasure.

It forms part of a big year for publisher Take-Two. Aside from our vault hunting antics, you have Mafia: The Old Country coming this year, and a little open-world game called Grand Theft Auto 6, which is still expected to arrive in late 2025.

Borderlands 4 is the first of those to get a definite date on the calendar. Sounds about right for Lilith and company. Have a look at our lists of the best multiplayer games and the best robot games in the meantime to stay nimble.
