After Far Cry 5 and Far Cry 6 were met with mixed reviews, Ubisoft is taking its time with Far Cry 7. There is currently no official word regarding the development of Far Cry 7, but many rumors about the game have started circulating recently. Far Cry 7 will supposedly take some big swings compared to its predecessors — like the game’s rumored time limit — that have fans intrigued by this next entry in the iconic Ubisoft franchise.
These rumors have prompted plenty of conversations within the Far Cry community, with many fans voicing what they both want and need out of Far Cry 7. Australia
It’s honestly surprising that Far Cry has already had three different games set on tropical islands but has yet to give Australia its time in the sun. Over the years, plenty of fans have expressed just how much they would like to see Far Cry‘s take on the Australian outback. So few open world games in general have taken a crack at an Australian setting, and Far Cry seems like the perfect candidate for so many reasons.
Surviving the Climate and Creatures of a Far Cry Outback
Australia would stand out both in terms of biomes and color palette compared to previous games. While venturing across country, players could explore deserts, grasslands, forests, and coastal areas. This would make for a diverse open world, and the outback’s harsh climate and terrain could provide plenty of challenges for players to encounter during their travels.
Considering how prominent dangerous wildlife is in the Far Cry series, Australia would fit the bill in the animal department too. Kangaroos, crocodiles, dingos, snakes, and spiders are just the start of what can be found in Australia, each of which could create serious hurdles and wild opportunities for the player. Just imagine the amount of chaos that would ensue when setting a rampaging kangaroo loose in an enemy encampment.
Eastern Europe
Much like Australia, Europe is a continent that has yet to be represented in a Far Cry setting. Europe has plenty of distinct, culturally rich regions that could make for a great open world. Eastern Europe in particular has been suggested by many members of the Far Cry fanbase as a potential setting for a future game.
How Eastern European Conflicts Could Fuel a Far Cry Storyline
One key reason why fans believe that Eastern Europe has the potential to be a great Far Cry setting is the region’s political strife. Several of Far Cry‘s previous entries tasked players with stoking the flames of rebellion against an authoritarian regime, be it Pagan Min’s Royal Army in Far Cry 4 or Anton Castillo’s FND in Far Cry 6. Given Eastern Europe’s past and present, the area could lend itself well to this sort of story — though Ubisoft would need to tread carefully in its depiction of this region to not make light of recent events.
What a Far Cry Set in Eastern Europe Could Look Like
When it comes to the open world, Eastern Europe has plenty of variety to offer. Similar to Far Cry 6, a hypothetical European setting could provide a nice mix of wilderness, rural villages, and urban environments to explore. Eastern Europe’s seasonal differences could also help the open world stand apart from many of the series’ tropical settings. Kyrat was such a memorable setting due to the snow-covered mountains in its backdrop, and a wintery Far Cry 7 would be a great juxtaposition to Far Cry 6‘s Yara.

North Africa
Far Cry 2 was the last and only Far Cry game to take place in Africa. Though Far Cry 2 was overshadowed by its successor Far Cry 3, it still has plenty of devoted fans of its own. One contributing factor was its African setting, which makes its own good case to return to the series.
Why a Return to Africa Just Makes Sense for Far Cry
If Far Cry wanted to return to Africa but not just feel like a Far Cry 2 clone, then North Africa would be a prime location. Spanning from Western Sahara to Sudan, North Africa’s distinct cultures and varied landscapes could make for an open world worth exploring in the next Far Cry. The game’s map could include Mediterranean forests, the Atlas Mountains, the Sahara Desert, and more. While Far Cry 2 did have some desert areas in its open world, a return to Africa would allow Ubisoft to explore this biome in a much more substantial manner. Since rideable animals were introduced after Far Cry 2, a new African desert biome opens the door for Ubisoft to introduce camels into the game, which could allow for some fun open world hijinks.
Southeast Asia
If Ubisoft decides that it wants to keep going with tropical settings, then Southeast Asia is a region that several fans have suggested. The series technically has visited the area before with Far Cry 5‘s Hours of Darkness DLC, and the original Far Cry was set in nearby Micronesia. That said, Southeast Asia is an interesting region that could easily support a full-length Far Cry game.
How a Southeast Asian Setting Could Make the Tropics Worth Revisiting
Between Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, and the island nations in the area, Ubisoft has plenty of options for where it could set a Far Cry game. Southeast Asia combines beautiful coastlines and lush rainforests with unique regional architecture like that seen in Angkor Wat or Hanoi’s French colonial buildings. If done properly, Southeast Asia could make for Far Cry‘s most visually stunning setting ever.
