Japanese news website MantanWeb recently shared an exclusive interview with Dragon Ball DAIMA producer Akio Iyuko, in which he revealed how involved Akira Toriyama truly was in the series.

Dragon Ball Daima, which will soon conclude, became a special series after Toriyama’s death, as it is the last Dragon Ball work with his signature – his unexpected swan song. However, some fans have questioned if the creator of the franchise had actually been deeply involved in it.

Rumor: Dragon Ball Daima Might Have A Special Saiyan Transformation For The Finale

Dragon Ball Daima’s finale will be major. A special transformation might be in store.

In the interview, Iyuko states that the original plan was only to ask Toriyama for a few directions and advices. However, as things went on, Toriyama got enthusiastic about it, getting more and more involved, and ended up making the most of it:

We started talking about it around six years ago, when Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero was in production. While the movie was still in production, we started saying that we wanted to produce a different, new series. As there was a movie in production, I didn’t want to put an extra burden on Toriyama, just wanted him to take a look and give some opinions on it, like “What do you think about it?”. As we advanced, he got more and more excited about it. Departing from the original plan, which was just consulting him, he ended up doing almost all of it.

Toriyama was like “What kind of place is the Demon Realm? And the new characters?”, and then the world of Daima was born and solidified.

Dragon Ball GT As a Starting Point

According to him, when the anime started production, the story wasn’t yet finished, and they took a long time writing it. He also revealed that the controversial Dragon Ball GT was in fact a starting point for Daima, and it was Toriyama who gave the idea of not only making Goku smaller, but everyone else too.

Iyoku think that Goku as a kid is able to reach a wider audience – their intent was to create a new show which parents, especially those who watched Dragon Ball when they were kids, could watch with their children.

While confirming that Toriyama wasn’t merely an adviser and that the story is a sequel to Dragon Ball Z, Iyoku didn’t seem to make a big deal of the series’ “canonical” timeline. It is connected to the original story, and Toriyama probably had more in his mind, but that’s all.

Could A Dragon Ball Daima Sequel Be On The Way?

When asked about an eventual sequel to the story, Iyoku makes it looks like they don’t have much in mind for now, but could still come up with something. He states that they aimed for a worldwide release despite not being sure of how successful the story would be, and added that Dragon Ball will continue (while not mentioning Daima specifically), but it takes time to produce anime, as it requires proper preparation.

Dragon Ball Daima is streaming on Crunchyroll according to the Japanese broadcast. Episodes are added to Hulu and Netflix a week later.
