Star Wars has set its course for the franchise’s next major trilogy, and fans can finally take things easy as the franchise’s leading lady gives the first positive update on the project in a long while, bolstering support for the embattled project.
Star Wars has been in its Disney+ era for a while now, but it’s always been the understanding that the franchise is best known (and best served) on the big screen. While the prequel trilogy wasn’t as well-received as expected, the Disney-era sequel trilogy would face an even more divided audience. Despite this setback, Daisy Ridley, who headlined the sequels as Rey Palpatine, was rumored to be in talks for a return to Star Wars as far back as 2021. However, the path to her franchise return hasn’t been a straightforward one by any means, and a lot of the coverage surrounding the potential project set to bring her back has been discouraging.

While it was strongly suggested of late that Ridley’s Star Wars film was officially on hold at Lucasfilm, the franchise’s chosen one herself has finally given fans some encouraging words on the progress going on behind the scenes. Speaking to Comicbook about her upcoming project Cleaner, Ridley spoke briefly on her (still) upcoming Star Wars return project, tentatively called New Jedi Order. “I have not read the latest script, but I know what’s happening, and I know the story, and I think what feels really good is that George is a phenomenal writer,” Ridley opined. “I think we’re making sure that this story is the best way, this script is the best way to tell the story, and I think it will be worthwhile. for everyone watching it, and I am very excited, yeah.” With most of the news about this project coming from leaks, rumors and speculation, there’s been little from official channels other than reports of setbacks, so Ridely’s optimistic message is a sigh of relief.
Ridley also answered questions on her attitude towards potentially taking on a role in MCU, and gave a pretty cool answer. “Look, I’m open to loads of stuff,” Ridley said. “I work with this amazing second AD called Matthew Sharp, and he texts me cause he’s doing Avengers, and he goes, ‘If they call.’ So I was like, ‘If they call, absolutely.’ I then of course love Batman, love The Penguin. I’m a fan of so many sorts of films. Yeah, I’m open to everything.” This is an ironic attitude, as it closely resembles Henry Cavill’s free and open attitude to joining franchises he likes, and some fans have expressed concerns about parallels between Ridley’s Star Wars movie situation and the Cavill Superman incident at DC. However, there’s some solid evidence that Lucasfilm is going all in on Ridley, a boon that Cavill was unfortunately denied.
While it’s not great that the film is still stuck on the script, Ridley’s confirmation that there’s a concrete idea for what the powers that be at Lucasfilm want for the project is pretty reassuring. In truth, just being able to locate some positive updates on the project might be more important than the actual content at this juncture. It’s been clear for a while that the film wouldn’t be hitting theaters anytime soon, but the deluge of bad news and scathing rumors has done a lot of damage to the project in the meantime. That’s doubly bad for the franchise, as there’s a lot riding on the success of a new Rey trilogy. Ridley is set to take on the role of mentor in the upcoming Star Wars movie, and this role seems integral to the franchise’s future plans. While the Disney+ shows teased fans with a young Luke Skywalker looking to rebuild the Jedi Order, the proper timeline and unspoken rules of canon preference made it very clear that this was never going to amount to anything. Rey has been chosen to bridge her own trilogy with the next era of Star Wars on the big screen, and for better or worse, that starts with New Jedi Order.
The most recently attached Star Wars: New Jedi Order movie writer may explore politics in the script for the upcoming return, and that could lead to some interesting plotlines within what fans expect will be another trilogy led by Ridely. Star Wars fans will have to wait quite a while longer for any concrete details one way or another, but it is a nice change of pace to hear some good news about a project that Lucasfilm seems dead set on making regardless.
