Critical Role Announces Release Date for Daggerheart TTRPG System

Critical Role Announces Release Date for Daggerheart TTRPG System

Critical Role has officially announced that Daggerheart will be released on May 20. Gamers looking for an alternative to Dungeons and Dragons won’t have to wait long to give Critical Role’s new Daggerheart system a try.

During a State of the Press announcement for Critical Role’s Darrington Press publishing company in 2023, the multimedia group revealed it was working on Daggerheart, a new d12-based fantasy tabletop roleplaying system that utilizes a unique card-based progression system and the Hope and Fear mechanic. Over the next two years, multiple playtests of the system took place, including some by the community at conventions like GenCon, and in actual play one-shots on the Critical Role channel.

Now, Daggerheart is almost ready to be shipped out to anticipating fans. Critical Role recently announced the official launch of Daggerheart would be on May 20, where it will be available to order from the game’s website, Darrington Press Guild stores, and many local game stores, with digital versions available through DriveThruRPG and Demiplane. Players will be able to find Daggerheart at other stores that sell TTRPGs like Dungeons and Dragons starting June 3.

Critical Role’s Daggerheart TTRPG Release Dates

  • May 20
    • Physical versions through Daggerheart.com, Darrington Press Guild stores, and other local game stores
    • Digital versions via Demiplane and DriveThruRPG
  • June 3
    • Other book and game stores

Daggerheart is available for pre-order right now from many of these locations. The Daggerheart Core Set, which runs for $60, includes the 300-page hardcover rulebook and 279 character customization cards, along with the rules PDF, while the $150 limited edition also comes with alternate cover art, a GM screen, a dice set, tokens, and more. Fans who only want the digital version of the rules can get it for $35 through Demiplane, or $45 via Nexus and DriveThruRPG in a bundle that includes print-and-play versions of the game’s cards.

The May 20 release date for Daggerheart is more noteworthy than players might initially think. May 12 is the 10-year anniversary of Critical Role, so it is a fitting time for the actual play to release their very own system. What’s more, Critical Role also just finished up Campaign 3 with a world-altering conclusion, so many fans wonder if the stream will be switching over to Daggerheart for its next game.

Either way, players won’t have to wait long to find out. Starting February 13, Critical Role is running a four-week miniseries called Exandria Unlimited: Divergence, followed by an Exandria Wrap-Up talk show on March 13 shortly before Daggerheart’s official launch. Fans can expect to hear whatever the nerdy voice actors have planned for the future – which might include a Critical Role video game – not long after that, if not during the Exandria Wrap-up itself.
