Mods have always been a prevalent part of Civilization‘s PC community. For just about every Civ entry over the last three decades, mods have been a great way for fans to experience new content in between official DLC releases, and experience crossover content from franchises that Civ would likely never officially partner with, such as Fallout and Game of Thrones. But as is the case with most games, some of the best Civilization mods have been those designed to fix some of the respective game’s biggest issues.

According to Civilization 6‘s Nexus Mods page, the most popular Civ 6 mod of all time is still Remgrandt’s “RestartButton” mod, an 18KB mod that simply adds a restart button to Civilization 6‘s in-game menu. That mod came out just two weeks after Civ 6‘s 2016 PC launch, and it’s been downloaded over 72,000 times. The modding community has often done some heavy lifting when a new Civilization entry releases, and that’s likely to be the case again with Civilization 7.

Why Civilization 7’s UI Is Being Criticized

While fans and critics alike have a lot of feedback about Firaxis’ latest entry in the long-running 4X series, some of the most common points of criticism revolve around Civilization 7‘s UI. Some of the most notable issues are as follows:

  • Civilization 7‘s UI feels poorly optimized for PC players who play up-close to a monitor, with text boxes being unusually large
  • Actions and information that are usually displayed on-screen are now hidden in side menus
  • Tutorial tips and large information boxes pop up at random and take up a good portion of the screen
  • City and settlement nameplates are unusually large
  • Less detailed information is available on the Global Yields Breakdown screen
  • No search function for the map like in Civ 6
  • The minimalist UI and menu font and color scheme isn’t as interesting as Civ 6‘s more vibrant approach

Fans Will Need to Wait a Little Longer for Official Civilization 7 UI Fixes

A few days ago, before Civilization 7 had its full launch, Firaxis made a statement regarding the game’s early reception. In this statement, Firaxis confirmed that a handful of fixes are already on their way, with UI fixes being the team’s biggest priority right now. Firaxis specifically stated that it would be looking into “making UI interactions more intuitive, improving map readability, [and] fixing areas of polish like formatting.” Firaxis then stated it’s “committed to getting this right,” and as such these UI fixes might take some time.

Mods Might End Up Doing Some Heavy Lifting for Civilization 7 In The Meantime

It might be a little while before Firaxis’ official UI fixes come to Civilization 7, and if this entry is anything like the last, then eager modders might already be in the process of taking matters into their own hands. Even if Civilization 7‘s potential UI mods aren’t perfect, they’ll likely be enough to keep some PC fans invested until the official fixes arrive, and they’ll probably do a good job of showing Firaxis the type of changes that fans want to see.
