Much of The Sims is devoted to the career grind. After all, you don’t even have days off in this game. While there’s plenty to do, you’ll need money to do it, and to earn those promotions you’ll need skills. Each job will have a set of skills your Sims will have to master, but which ones should be your priority? Here are the best skills to level in the Sims.

Creativity
Art For Art’s Sake
Let’s make some art! Creativity is leveled through creative activities like painting. Any paintings created can be sold for Simoleons, which can be a neat little side hustle in the right hands. The price of your paintings is linked to the painter Sim’s creativity skill, so get to practicing. You can also earn Creativity skills through playing instruments like the guitar or piano.
Creativity is good for careers that require some out of the box thinking, such as Acting or Paranormal. It is also just a good skill to have for other jobs, as you never know when your Sims might need to think outside the box.

Logic
Perfectly Logical, Simmer
Logic is primarily boosted through playing chess. Sims can either play by themselves or with somebody else. If you’re struggling to have two newly minted Sims hit it off – since relationships can’t be set in Create A Sim – chess is a great way to break the ice. You can also have your Sims look through telescopes to boost their Logic skill.
Logic is good for careers like Medicine or Science, where your Sims will have to be the best of the best. Invest in Logic early to make the later career requirements a breeze, and your Sims will soon be raking in the cash.

Body
Does A Body Good
Body is an interesting skill in the Sims, as it has no real impact on what your Sim looks like. Sims in this game are fairly static creatures – they don’t change over time without player input. But that doesn’t mean the Body skill is useless – in fact, this skill is primarily useful for careers. Level this whenever you get the chance to get those requirements out of the way.
Pretty much every career requires a little dose of Body skill to get ahead. Most of these careers are what you’d expect: Pro Athelete, Life of Crime, Law Enforcement. But it’s also useful in Business (they’ve got to look their best), Entertainment (tours can be brutal), Journalism (chasing down sources is hard work), and Slacker (you’ve got to do plenty of…stuff. The Slacker career is weird.)

Charisma
Smooth Talking Simlish
Charisma is required for every single career track in some way, shape, or form. Obviously, some careers will require it more than others, but every career will require at least a few points in Charisma. After all, making friends and influencing people is half the work. Get your Sim chatting in front of the mirror as soon as possible to boost their gift of the gab.

However, if your Sim doesn’t want to talk to themselves, there are some other ways to boost this skill. Talking to birds, using the Schlooper Bubble Blower, or hitting up the Face of Shakespeare statue will soon have your Sims being the most charismatic around. Careers like Politics and Business will require a lot of Charisma. Education, Fashion, and Paranormal also require ton of Charisma, so if you need it (and everyone will), get practicing!

Mechanical
Trust Us, Things Will Break
If you know anything about Sims, it’s that they love to break things. They just can’t help it – it’s in their little digital souls. If you want to avoid massive repair bills, Mechanical is a good skill to invest in.
Just know that Sims who attempt these repairs without high Mechanic skill points are liable to get shocked by electricity. Getting shocked too many times is an easy way to meet the Grim Reaper, so only allow trained Sims to handle any broken electrical objects.
You can earn this skill through bookshelves or by making gnomes or gargoyles. The Mechanical skill is valued in careers like Medicine, Life of Crime, and Hacker, so these life saving skills might just come in handy.

Cooking
For Plumbob’s Sake, Max This
If there’s ever been a skill that you need to get one Sim learning as soon as possible, it’s Cooking. We’re not kidding. Have at least one of your Sims start learning this the second you start a new household. Better yet, just have all of them learn a few points right away. Better still, just have all of your Sims dedicate their lives to cooking at all hours. Okay, no, that’s a little too far.

But seriously – investing into cooking in the first moments of a household is probably the best quality of life choice you can make for your Sims. If a Sim uses a stove with less than three points of cooking skill, they have a high risk of starting a fire. Using a stove with no cooking points is almost a guaranteed fire starter.
Fire also spreads fast in this game, and Sims take their time to act. So, if you don’t want the house to become the Hindenburg two minutes into a play session, invest in cooking. Careers like Culinary Arts, Military, and Fashion all call for points in Cooking, so your points might just save your life and start your career.
