Edge of Tomorrow Star Has An Update On A Potential Sequel
Edge of Tomorrow star Emily Blunt recently talked about whether she’d be willing to do a sequel to the popular sci-fi film.
According to SugoiLITE and FUCE00, two social media accounts specializing in backstage information and leaks, an anime movie by Studio 4°C (Berserk: Golden Age) is currently in production.
There is no release window yet, or any information on when the official announcement should be made. But considering that these accounts tend to post information that is later officially confirmed, there is a good chance this one is also true.
What Is All You Need Is Kill?
All You Need Is Kill is a light-novel series written by Hiroshi Sakurazaka and illustrated by Yoshitoshi Abe (Serial Experiments Lain character designer), originally released in 2004. It is set in a future where the Earth is invaded by aliens called Mimics. Keiji Kiriya is a soldier fighting for the United Defense Force – which is losing the battle.
After killing a weird Mimic, Keiji is killed in battle. However, he wakes up on the day before the battle. He is stuck in this time loop, allowing him to improve his skills. Reliving the same day over and over, he discovers he is not alone, and joins Rita Vrataski in a battle against those Mimics that can “reset” time.
The novel was adapted into manga by Ryosuke Takeuchi and Takeshi Obata (Death Note) and also into an American graphic novel by Nick Mamatas and Lee Ferguson – both were released in 2014.
Both All You Need Is Kill original novel, manga adaptation and graphic novel are licensed/published in the US by VIZ Media – the graphic novel is published under the Haikasoru imprint.
Praised Hollywood Live-Action Adaptation
Not everyone is aware that Edge of Tomorrow is based on a Japanese novel – it is one of those few cases of successful American live-action adaptations of a Japanese series, as both commercial and critical reception were generally positive.
There are significant changes in the movie – one of them is the main character, now called Bill Cage – but the main plot line is the same (and there is a key character called Rita Vrataski).
There has been information about a sequel movie, but no further news has been released since 2016. However, in 2024, Tom Cruise and Warner Bros. signed a deal to co-produce movies, and some speculate Edge of Tomorrow 2 might be one of their joint projects (Emily Blunt doesn’t seem to dislike the idea).
