Summary

  • The SEC is investigating Roblox, but details are still unknown.
  • The SEC said it couldn’t share staff correspondence related to Roblox, as it would cause “harm to the ongoing enforcement proceedings.”
  • Predators using Roblox to contact children remains a top concern.

Roblox has been no stranger to controversy. From being banned in Turkey for child safety reasons, to receiving “hundreds” of reports for the same reason every day, the game is constantly brought up during discussions about online safety, particularly for children. Of course, there’s also people turning outfits from certain games into male genitalia.

Roblox is coming to PS5 which means it’s only a matter of time until my son asks to play it.

It seems that the game once again finds itself in hot water, this time with the SEC. The US Securities and Exchange Commission has confirmed that Roblox is part of an ongoing investigation. However, details about the investigation haven’t been revealed as of yet.

Why Is The SEC Investigating Roblox?

“We have confirmed with Division of Enforcement staff that there are responsive emails between Enforcement staff referencing Roblox and that these emails are a part of an active and ongoing investigation,” the commission told Bloomberg. The SEC also told Bloomberg that it couldn’t share staff correspondence related to Roblox, as it would cause “harm to the ongoing enforcement proceedings.”

Neither Roblox nor the SEC has shared any more information about the investigation. While the game has constantly come under the spotlight due to child safety concerns, Roblox boss Stefano Corazza is of a different opinion.

In an interview last year, Corazza said that “hearing from their experience, they didn’t feel like they were exploited! They felt like, ‘Oh my god, this was the biggest gift, all of a sudden I could create something, I had millions of users, I made so much money I could retire.'”

A spokesperson later reached out to us to explain that monetary gain is not the primary motivator for most players, and that the “overwhelming majority” of creators that do make money on the platform are over the age of 18.

It seems we’ll have to wait and see what the investigation is about once the SEC reveals more details. The most pressing issue on Roblox is predators using the platform to talk to children, who make up a significant majority of the user base.
