The Harry Potter reboot at HBO is still pretty swamped in terms of castings for the upcoming first season, but it seems that one fan-favorite actor that’s had their name circulating around the project might have been placed into consideration for an unexpected role.
Harry Potter’s dominance as a multimedia franchise really kicked off with the film series, which took it from the already lofty level of a bestselling children’s book series to a massive international entertainment juggernaut with characters that fans could put faces to. While the films have gone down as some of the most well-received adaptations ever, a recent move by Warner Bros to reboot the film series for TV and streaming has led to a resurgence of interest in adapting the works all over again. While there are tons of iconic roles that will be difficult to replace, the most interesting off the bat is Lord Voldemort, one of the most memorable villains in fiction, and a role that fans everywhere have been quite eager to see recast ahead of the upcoming reboot series.

Hardly the most controversial act its protagonist would commit, a Hogwarts Legacy 2 could feasibly allow players to be their own ‘Half-Blood Prince.’
While many fans have put forward Hollywood star Cillian Murphy as their top pick for the role, and the fact that a Harry Potter director totally agrees with that Voldemort casting, a recent report suggests that if the esteemed actor does join the project, it won’t be as He Who Must Not Be Named. According to trusted scooper Daniel Richtman on Patreon, Murphy is absolutely being considered for the cast of the upcoming Harry Potter reboot series…as Professor Quirrell. Fans of the franchise will remember Quirrell as the timid, oft-ineffectual Defense Against The Dark Arts teacher from the first book and film, who started the trend of the post being taken on by questionable characters when he’s revealed to be a villain in league with Lord Voldemort himself despite starting out entirely opposed to the dark arts.
While no one attached to the project has said anything to suggest that anyone, Murphy included, was a lock for the role of Voldemort, it’s fair to say that Quirinus Quirrell was not high on the list of alternatives that fans might have drafted up. Quirrel isn’t quite as prominent as many of the series’ villains, nor is his eerie death particularly interesting to fans, despite having a quite literal connection to Lord Voldemort. However, as many outlets have discovered since the project was announced, there’s no chance of a confirmation or clarification from an official source, as WBD has a stock response to all inquiries concerning the casting process. “We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation. As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals.”
Considering that the Harry Potter TV series’ delays in casting characters could trigger some problems for the production down the line, it’s a bit worrying that the process is taking so long post-confirmation. However, there’s a lot to be said for taking the time to make careful choices and working out the kinks as they arise. A good number of the actors hired on for season one will be featured across the entire show, so there’s real value in making a careful selection and good reasons why certain performers (especially those in massively high demand) might not want to take on roles that require a seven or eight-season commitment. For Murphy, who has always been a fan-favorite and recently hit what is inarguably a career-high level of acclaim with Oppenheimer, it would be a really tough call to sign on for almost a decade’s worth of work on what is, in a very real sense, a children’s TV show, despite the sheer number of adult Potterheads that will absolutely be tuning in. If a star with that many options were to be locked down for that long, it would take a ridiculous amount to make happen. With those considerations, it makes a lot of sense for both parties for Murphy to get a relatively lowkey but important role in the show’s first season.
If accurate, this might come as a bit of a disappointment for fans. However, there’s no doubt the role of Voldemort will go to someone capable and motivated, as will the myriad of other interesting heroes and villains across the series. Furthermore, the franchise could even opt for a potential link between the reboot series and a Hogwarts Legacy sequel, allowing for the addition of characters to the canon that take the worldbuilding and narrative even further than the show was already set to. While the wait is still going to be fairly lengthy before fans actually get to enjoy the first season, there’s a lot to look forward to, even if some of the casting doesn’t go quite as imagined.
The Harry Potter franchise is available to stream on Max, with a tentative 2026~2027 release window highlighted for the upcoming reboot.
