  • Mortal Kombat 2 boasts a killer cast lineup, including returning and new characters.

2021’s Mortal Kombat movie performed well enough at the box office and with fans to earn a sequel that is scheduled for release later this year. Marketing for the film is kicking off by promoting the newest addition to Mortal Kombat 2’s roster, and it’s a character fans are very excited to see.

Mortal Kombat is one of the most popular fighting game franchises in history, so naturally, expectations for a film adaptation were high. The nature of the story and lore in the game also made a screen adaptation tricky, but director Simon McQuoid formed a solid story foundation by placing audiences in the shoes of a new character, Cole Young, who gets dragged into the heightened fighting saga as he seeks the truth of his origins. Many Mortal Kombat mainstays like Kano, Jax, Mileena, Raiden, and Scorpion feature in the live-action film, appearing in a multitude of bloody R-rated fight sequences. In the sequel, Mortal Kombat 2 is raising the bar by introducing more members of the game’s roster, including Karl Urban as Johnny Cage.

What to Expect from the Mortal Kombat Movie Sequel

Expectations are high for the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie sequel, and there is a lot of exciting source material it can pull from the games.

New Mortal Kombat 2 Movie Character Revealed In First Poster

The first poster for Mortal Kombat 2 has been released on the movie’s official Instagram account and, at first, it may be confusing for some viewers. The poster is for a movie titled Uncaged Fury and puts the actor, Johnny Cage, front and center in front of an explosive background filled with motorbike stunts. The caption for the poster on socials reads “It’s Johnny ********* Cage.” There’s no mention of Mortal Kombat anywhere on the poster (apart from the credits in the billing block), but fans of the series will understand the reference the film is making here.

In the Mortal Kombat universe, Johnny Cage is an actor known for starring in action films. His time in the film industry has infused him with extensive skills in martial arts. A narcissistic Hollywood actor, Cage is a departure from Mortal Kombat’s more serious roster of characters and will no doubt be a source of comedy in the upcoming film sequel. Marketing the new Mortal Kombat movie as a Johnny Cage film is a clever way to promote the film’s new character, who will seemingly be a major part of the story. The Mortal Kombat 2 poster also reassures fans that Urban has the right look to pull off Johnny Cage’s character design, and his background of playing satirical roles like Billy Butcher in The Boys should lend itself to Cage’s sense of humor.

Mortal Komabt 2 Has a Huge Roster of Characters

Along with Urban, Mortal Kombat 2 will introduce Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Desmond Chiam as King Jerrod, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, and Damon Herriman as Quan Chi. Mortal Kombat original cast members Lewis Tan (Cole), Joe Taslim (Noob Saibot), Hiroyuki Sanada (Scorpion), Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade), Mehcad Brooks (Jax), Tadanonbu Asana (Raiden), and Josh Lawson (Kano) are also set to return, marking a killer lineup for the upcoming sequel. Mortal Kombat 2 will seemingly match, if not raise, the level of violence in the film, with the sequel recently receiving its official rating.

Mortal Kombat 2 is scheduled to release in cinemas on October 24, 2025.
