Summary

  • Mortal Kombat 2 has given us our first look at Karl Urban’s portrayal as Johnny Cage in the upcoming sequel.
  • Unsurprisingly, the look has managed to divide fans somewhat, with some thrilled with the casting, while other think urban is too old.
  • There are also once again claims that WWE star The Miz should have been the one for the job, but something tells me that ship has sailed.

Mortal Kombat 2 has been in production for quite a while now, and will be the sequel to the remake that was released in theaters back in 2021. We’ll no doubt see a lot of iconic characters from the series, but one making his silver screen debut in the rebooted Mortal Kombat movies is Johnny Cage, who is being played by The Boys actor Karl Urban.

Even before the casting was confirmed, Mortal Kombat fans were a bit wary about Urban playing the role, with many tipping him to be a much better fit for the likes of Kano or Kabal. Unfortunately for those people, Johnny Cage is the character that Warner Bros. decided to give Karl Urban, and our first look at him in the role was just revealed.

It’s a reveal that is very in-character, as Urban is sporting a leather jacket and some black sunglasses, using explosions and motorbikes as a backdrop. He has slicked-back hair and the swagger of Johnny Cage, and looks to be extremely faithful to his in-game look, but the reveal appears to have torn fans of the series quite a lot.

In the replies to the tweet that DiscussingFilm shared (which you can see embedded above), there’s quite a mixture of reactions. On one hand, you have people saying it looks like a great choice of casting and that this portrayal of Johnny Cage is near perfect, while others think that Urban looks a bit too old to be playing the role.

I appreciate Urban, but the casting is not accurate.

There seems to be an opinion shared among those not thrilled about Urban that the character needs to be a bit more of a pretty boy, with many bringing up WWE star The Miz yet again. The wrestler spent years trying to be cast as Johnny Cage in something, but was left disheartened back in 2023 after he revealed he never even got to audition for the role in Mortal Kombat 2.

A lot of people think he still deserves a chance, and that The Miz would have been a better fit overall, but you can’t deny that urban has the better acting chops. We’ll see if he manages to stick the landing when the movie actually releases on Cotober 24 later this year.
