In the far future universe of video games, things are either great or the opposite, and Warframe leans toward the latter. It’s set in a future universe with a massive evil force that wants to dominate or destroy all life. Luckily, there are weird beings called the Tenno, which have the superpowers and player advantage to do something about it.

However, before we got the MMO Warframe, its universe appeared in a little game called Dark Sector. No one will blame you if this is the first time you’ve heard about this game, but it’s more closely connected to the more active Warframe than you might think.

How Dark Sector Is Connected To The Warframe Universe

Digital Extremes, the team behind both games, has confirmed statements that Warframe is a spiritual sequel to Dark Sector. They’ve also referred to it as a new beginning since it’s different from its predecessor in many ways. In terms of the setting, the main thing that the two titles have in common is that they’re both set for the future.

However, Dark Sector is set on Earth in the “near future” at the time, while the Warframe is set so far further that space travel and bio-machinery are commonplace.

The initial problems with technology development, which in some cases grew out of control due to the Technocyte, have seemingly been made more manageable. People are now easily able to create machine enhancements for the body.

The Relationship With The Warframe Tenno

The stars of Warframe are the Tenno, entities that used to be human but changed so that they developed super-human abilities and were given enhanced mechanical suits (warframes) to amplify their old and new skills.

United in their fight against various threats, they formed a Faction also called Tenno and frequently went on missions to strike back at the enemy, save individuals, or liberate sectors.

In Dark Sector, the only Tenno that exists is the main character, Hayden Tenno. However, though he’s primarily human, he gets into an accident that transforms his arm into a biomechanical construct that also grants him powers, namely to summon and control a weapon at will called the Glaive (and in some cases, he wears a suit and helmet very similar to a Warframe).

Not only is this ability seen in the Warframe Tenno, but Hayden’s Glaive has also appeared as an available weapon. There’s also the presence of the Lotus insignia, which is prominent in both games; most notably, that’s why the Tenno awakens in Warframe.

How Dark Sector Is Connected To Warframe’s Story

The effects of Technocyte as seen in Warframe.

Although the two titles have very different narrative structures, one crucial element links them: the Technocyte virus. In Dark Sector, this virus transformed humans into aggressive mechanical beings, and Hayden was tasked with stopping its spread.

Although the end of Dark Sector’s story implies that the spread was halted, Warframe would beg to differ. In the far future, warframes were developed to resist the aggressive effects of Technocyte. Unfortunately, in some cases, warframes, both with and without users, still become infected, turning into mindless and violent machines.

While some sought to purge those infected in hopes of eradicating the virus, others tried to use the Technocyte’s mindless effects and gain control of the affected warframes. It’s unclear whether the Technocyte is still present, but certain infected warframes managed to maintain their sentience and continue the fight.
