Steam Replay Showed Me I Don’t Play My Steam Deck Enough

Steam’s mean machine is a great piece of kit, and I should utilise it more.

That said, it’s not a cheap handheld, with the most expensive variant costing nearly as much as a PlayStation 5 Pro. And it wasn’t until that OLED variant dropped that the LCD models dropped to a more palatable pricepoint before being discontinued.

But gamers are a resourceful bunch, and the price of a Steam Deck did not deter one gamer from wanting one. Instead, it pushed them to get to work, selling off Steam Trading Cards in hopes of being able to buy the console outright.

Patience Pays Off Massively

Here’s how it all went down — On February 2, the Ringler issued a challenge: buy a Steam Deck with trading cards.

For the uninitiated, Steam Trading Cards are little virtual goodies given for purchasing or playing games that can then be traded for real-life dollars. It sounds easy, but many are virtually worthless, with the majority being worth a couple of cents at best.

From there, they enlisted the help of their friends, as well as the larger gaming community to help them achieve their goal. Before they knew it, their fortunes quickly grew in the days following their initial call-to-action. By Feb. 5, they had enough to get the base model of the Steam Deck, and by the next day, they were able to place their order.

Even though the order was placed, thanks to over 20,000 Steam Trading Cards, the funds kept rolling in due to pending trades and existing donations of cards. Instead of putting the money towards games, they decided to donate an entire Steam Deck to a children’s hospital.

So, in the end, a bit of legwork and the combined effort of the gaming community led to not just one, but two Steam Deck consoles being bought. The latter of which will be put to good use by children in need. In other words, don’t let anyone tell you the odds, because with a little legwork and a ton of patience, you can make the console of your dreams come true.
