In an effort to provide more tools to protect privacy and to help ensure that its users aren’t bothered without recourse, Discord has announced that it is introducing a new Ignore feature. The Ignore feature will work much in the same way as the existing block function, but there are some differences between the two. As Discord puts it, the Ignore function is meant to be a “gentler” way of controlling one’s boundaries. The new Discord feature prevents users from seeing interactions from the person added to the list, but it doesn’t actually put a stop to new messages. Instead, any received messages – including those on shared servers – notifications, and activities are effectively silenced, but are still accessible.

Discord Ignore Offers More Options

Discord notes that this option is especially beneficial for those who want to be able to ignore another person without them knowing about it. The existing block feature would noticeably impact the user experience of the person who was blocked, in that they would no longer be able to tag the person who had blocked them, nor would they be able to view all the details of their user profile. In the update post, Discord points out that Ignore is particularly useful for young Discord users who don’t want to create confrontation through someone discovering that they’ve been blocked outright, while still providing the ability to avoid them covertly. The Ignore function can also be used when a user just needs some momentary peace, and those added to the Ignore list can be taken off of it at any time.

With more people and companies using Discord than ever, including console gamers, it’s a good idea to give users as many methods as possible to protect themselves from abuse and unwanted messages. This new introduction should help to keep users comfortable and safe while allowing them to continue using it to communicate with those they want to be in touch with.
