Summary

  • Embracing a life of crime in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 can lead to a grim execution cutscene at the gallows for Henry.
  • If you choose the option of going to the gallows… you’re going to the gallows.
  • At least the people are entertained by a nice afternoon hanging.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is the medieval peasant simulator we’ve been waiting for. You can get up to all the interesting things a peasant at the time could get up to, like smithing, alchemy, craftsmanship, and stealing a loaf of bread to keep you going. However, should your medieval crimes continue, medieval consequences will catch up.

Games should make divisive choices more often.

Plenty of games have bonus endings which are not really endings. The Far Cry series is the most notorious for this, giving you the option to end your game before it even begins, courtesy of Pagan Min. However, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 also has such an ending, and it’s quite dark.

To The Gallows!

If Henry decides to embrace a life of crime, there’s a chance that he will actually be sent to the gallows to hang. As highlighted by NikTek on Twitter (thanks, GamesRadar+), if you can’t pay your way out of trouble, you’ll be sent to the hangman for your crimes. Not mere jail time, directly to the gallows.

You’d think that the game would throw up a game over screen at this point, but Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 includes an entire cutscene showing Henry morbidly waiting in a cell, then taken through a raging mob to the gallows. A somber scene unfolds as he looks towards the sky before the hangman kicks the block from under him. It’s only then that the game over screen comes up, giving you the option to retry or load a previous save.

Warhorse Studios didn’t need to make this additional effort, and could simply have taken you to the game over screen directly, but this cutscene is a nice – albeit depressing – inclusion. Of course, you have the option to pay or fight your way out of being dragged away, but the fact that the devs decided to give you this option is quite impressive.

The dialogue option does include a marker to show that choosing it means your doom, and you get a well made but sad payoff if you chose to see what happens.
