Summary

  • LEGO might release a new Mario Kart set as part of the LEGO Icons line.
  • The LEGO set is rumored to cost $169.99.
  • A new Mario Kart video game is expected to launch for the Switch 2 this year as well.

A huge new LEGO Mario Kart set could be coming soon, at least according to a new rumor. LEGO first started releasing building sets based on the Super Mario franchise back in 2020 with a customizable board game and special Mario figure that played sounds from the Super Mario games. Later sets would add similar figures based on Luigi and Princess Peach and new game pieces for even more customization options.

Since then, LEGO’s Nintendo offerings have branched out into the realms of Animal Crossing, Donkey Kong, and The Legend of Zelda, and it wouldn’t be long before the equally popular Mario Kart was added to the mix. Last year, LEGO and Nintendo revealed a line of six Mario Kart LEGO sets featuring buildable characters, vehicles, and power-ups from the hit kart racing franchise. These sets eventually raced into retailers on January 1, but it seems that even more LEGO Mario Kart fun could be on the horizon.

Why a LEGO God of War Game Would Be a Great Match for LEGO Horizon Adventures

LEGO Horizon Adventures may have been a divisive title, but God of War could be the perfect franchise for another LEGO Sony game.

Instagram user lego_minecraft_goat recently posted a rumor that this year’s LEGO Icons set might be based on Mario Kart, as reported by Brick Fanatics. Most annual LEGO Icons sets are themed after a real-life vehicle, but this year’s release will reportedly be numbered 72037 and hit retailers sometime in July at the suggested price of $169.99. This is a much steeper entry cost than the previously released LEGO Mario Kart sets, as the LEGO Icons line is typically aimed at older collectors.

LEGO Mario Icons Set Could Be Coming in July

Even lego_minecraft_goat admits that this is just an unverified rumor at this point, but the timing of a new LEGO Mario set being released this summer couldn’t be better. Nintendo will finally release the long-awaited Switch 2 console sometime later this year, and one of the first titles shown for the new hardware was a Mario Kart game. Very little has been confirmed about this new Mario Kart as of this writing, but the footage shown during the Nintendo Switch 2 reveal hinted that the game could have massive 24-player races.

This makes a new LEGO Mario Kart set a prime opportunity to help promote both the new game and the Nintendo Switch 2 console it is being developed for, even if the set in question will reportedly be much more expensive than LEGO and Nintendo’s past offerings. Both companies are set for a busy 2025 in any case, as a set modeled after the beloved Game Boy handheld of old was recently confirmed to reach stores in October.
