Best Games With A Playable Captain America, Ranked

One of the most iconic Marvel heroes of all time features in quite a selection of games for those who want to punch fascists and throw a frisbee.

Some voice actors only got to voice Captain America for one or two projects, while others have practically made a career out of portraying the Star Spangled Man. Each one of them delivers something different to the character in their performance, whether it’s a classic superhero voice or a more grounded take on Captain America.

Trev Broudy

Like Something Out Of The Golden Age Of Superheroes

  • Notable Project: Marvel Ultimate Alliance

The first Marvel Ultimate Alliance is a strong attempt at creating a fleshed-out Marvel universe in game form. However, the voice direction leans toward being a bit hammy, even with the better voice actors such Trev Broudy as Captain America and Steve Blum as Wolverine, who are both major characters in the story.

Trev Broudy’s Captain America performance feels like an homage to classic superhero serials and radio shows. He always speaks as if he has his hands on his hips ready to teach a PSA to kids and adults alike, and for the tone of Marvel Ultimate Alliance, it works. He feels like the Captain America that is plucked out of the 1940s.

Chris Evans

Reprised His MCU Role In The Tie-In Video Game

  • Notable Projects: Captain America: Super Soldier, Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, The Avengers, Avengers: Age Of Ultron, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame

Most people know Chris Evans as the live-action Captain America who portrayed the character from 2011 to 2019 in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, he did lend his voice to the role in Captain America: Super Soldier, a game that retells part of the story of Captain America: The First Avenger while also expanding on his exploits during World War 2.

Chris Evans was accompanied by multiple actors from the movie, including Hayley Atwell. Having done voice work for movies like TMNT and Battle For Terra, Evans did deliver a good Captain America performance. Even though he is a better screen actor than a voice actor, he helped make Captain America: Super Soldier the best of the poor series of MCU video games at that time.

David Kaye

  • Notable Project: Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2

Where the first game was all about traveling realms to fight many outlandish villains, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 took on a darker and more grounded story. Reflecting that new direction, David Kaye was the new voice of Captain America, giving a gruffer and intentionally tired performance that fits the story of Steve Rogers fighting the people he once considered friends.

Ultimate Alliance 2 is a game heavily inspired by comics, adapting the Civil War storyline long before the Marvel Cinematic Universe did it. As a result, Captain America is portrayed in two ways, which David Kaye executed effectively, as the game is split into two campaigns, one from his perspective and the other from Iron Man’s faction, showcasing the good and bad of both sides.

5

David Hayter

Steve Rogers Sounds Like A Superhero Solid Snake

  • Notable Projects: Spider-Man: The Animated Series

In terms of his voice acting career, David Hayter is most famous for his iconic portrayal of Solid Snake in the first four Metal Gear Solid games. Hayter has also had a long history of superhero projects, including writing the script of the original X-Men movie and when he lent his voice to the role of Captain America in multiple episodes of Spider-Man: The Animated Series.

The David Hayter version of Captain America is a serious yet noble portrayal, embodying the character’s selflessness and liberty. Notably, he was the first to appear in a Secret Wars adaptation, and his voice closely resembles that of Solid Snake, which is a bonus delight for Metal Gear Solid fans.

4

Justin Gross

The Animated Duology Doesn’t Get Enough Credit

  • Notable Projects: Ultimate Avengers, Ultimate Avengers 2: Rise Of The Black Panther

In the early 2000s, Marvel started to branch out and deliver animated straight-to-video movies similar to DC. In that era came Ultimate Avengers and Ultimate Avengers 2: Rise Of The Black Panther. In both Justin Gross played Captain America respectfully and with his version being heavily inspired by the Ultimate comics, his performance of Captain America was much more broody and felt more like a rugged soldier.

Similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe version, Justin Gross’ version of Captain America plays the fish out of water scenario with more pathos. He’s a man out of time, and he struggles with losing those he cared about and missing out on decades of history. At the same time, he is still a valiant leader of the Avengers and his more serious tone makes him feel more believable.

3

Jeff Schine

Marvel’s Avengers Did All The Characters Justice

  • Notable Project: Marvel’s Avengers

Jeff Schine, an accomplished voice actor known for roles in games like Call Of Duty and Red Dead Redemption 2, voiced Captain America in Marvel’s Avengers. Despite the game’s controversies, the cast received praise, including Troy Baker as Bruce Banner, Nolan North as Iron Man, Laura Bailey as Black Widow, Sandra Saad as Ms. Marvel, and Travis Willingham as Thor.

These comic book games might be a tad controversial, but their love for the genre and the source material makes them stand out from the competition.

Despite the least amount of screen time for story reasons, Jeff Schine’s Captain America was a highlight. He felt very grounded and subtle, but he was also powerful when he needed to feel like the leader of the Avengers. Given that the cast has worked together on other projects, it’s no surprise that Jeff Schine’s chemistry with the other heroes is a highlight, especially when most of the Avengers’ personal stories are based around Captain America’s sacrifice on A-Day.

2

Roger Craig Smith

Few Expected Sonic The Hedgehog To Be An Ideal Captain America

  • Notable Projects: Avengers Assemble, Ultimate Spider-Man, Hulk And The Agents Of SMASH, Marvel’s Future Avengers, Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors, Disney Infinity, Iron Man & Captain America: Heroes United, LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, Marvel Avengers: Battle For Earth

Most know Roger Craig Smith as the voice of Sonic the Hedgehog in many games over the years, Chris Redfield in Resident Evil, and Batman in various projects. Starting with Marvel Avengers: Battle For Earth, Smith has gone on to have a prolific career as Captain America in Marvel video games, animated shows, and animated movies.

When Captain America guest-starred in Ultimate Spider-Man, this would lead to Roger Craig Smith starring as the character in Avengers Assemble for many years. His version of Captain America is almost like a middle ground between old and new versions of Captain America, balancing out charisma and charm with enough softness and emotion to make his version feel grounded enough to relate to.

1

Brian Bloom

He Is To Captain America What Kevin Conroy Is To Batman

  • Notable Projects: Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, Marvel Rivals, Marvel’s Midnight Suns, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite, Marvel Future Revolution, Marvel Heroes Omega, Marvel Dimension Of Heroes

The amount of times Brian Bloom has voiced Captain America rivals that of Roger Craig Smith, with some considering him a definitive Captain America actor like Kevin Conroy was to Batman. He was in Marvel’s Midnight Suns, Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, Marvel Rivals, and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order just to name a few.

Brian Bloom also has a similar style to portraying Captain America as Roger Craig Smith, finding that ideal balance between exaggerated heroism in his tone, while also adding as much humanity to Steve Rogers as possible. In Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, he is often praised for his Captain America evolving from a stranger in a strange land to the worthy leader of the Avengers.
