The MMO Tibia launched in 1997 with four vocations for players to choose from. For 28 years, players have been able to be knights, druids, paladins, sorcerers, and nothing more, as unlike other MMOs, Tibia hasn’t added any new ones. Now, at long last, that’s all about to change.

In 2025, Tibia is finally getting a new vocation: monk. This new vocation has been in the works for a year already, and gives users a new way to play for the first time in almost three decades. While we don’t have a firm release date, developer CipSoft has set out how monks will work, giving us a taste of what’s to come.

While the tease trailer doesn’t give away too much, the devs gave us more details in a blog post.

“Developing a new vocation is still a challenging task and more than just creating new spells or some gear; it is about ensuring that the new vocation feels as a natural extension of Tibia’s world and gameplay,” the blog reads. “It would need to stand as a fully fledged option alongside the other vocations. […] It should appeal to all players, new or veteran, equally. It should provide a contribution to any group without being mandatory and without pushing out other vocations.”

However, the devs did feel that it made a lot of sense to add monks to the game after all this time. For starters, bosses can be taken on in teams of five, so everyone can play a different role. This also gives you another melee option other than knights.

There Is One Thing That New World Still Does Better Than Any Other MMO

New World’s PvP is brilliant, from early level open world fights to full-scale wars.

So, the team wanted to create a damage-dealing vocation that could also operate as a secondary healer. Bards and rogues were considered, but monks were settled on, as they felt that this suited the role better.

The blog post also reveals some of the abilities that will be at the monk’s disposal when they’re added into Tibia:

  • Harmony: Used to cast certain spells. Accumulated and stored by using other spells.
  • Virtues: You can activate one of three at any given time. One boosts harmony spells, another boosts fist fighting, and the other lets you do more healing.
  • Serene: A state that monks can achieve, making them more powerful. You get this by playing solo/being far away from team members, or being around fewer than six monsters.

With all of this in mind, the devs have clearly put a lot of thought into balancing monks with the other vocations. It remains to be seen how this impacts the game when they’re made available later this year, but for now, the reception appears to be positive.
