Thanks to the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, superheroes are everywhere these days. So many different characters that had never gotten their chance to shine outside the comic book space are now dominating the video game and movie scene, and that will likely continue for years to come. However, at the same time, the DCEU has not had the same success, as the studio prepares to reboot the entire thing. While it remains to be seen if the reboot succeeds, those recent struggles also seem to be affecting the video game industry as a title following The Flash has reportedly been canceled.
WB Games Montreal was apparently working on a title following The Flash, but it was scrapped after the poor performance of the DCEU film. The studio has since been moved to support Wonder Woman‘s development instead, with The Flash being left in the dust. But it really should not have been. Even though the film failed to make an impact, a game following the Scarlet Speedster could have led to something incredibly special. And hopefully, he will be given a chance to shine once more.

The Flash Could Shine in His Own Video Game
There Are So Many Exciting Flash Stories to Tell
Introduced back in 1940, Flash has gone on to become one of DC’s most iconic characters. Across his history, at least five different characters have taken on the mantle, with the likes of Barry Allen and Jay Garrick being the most prominent. Not only has he spawned countless of his own standalone comics, but he has also gone on to be an integral member of the Justice Society, Justice League, and even the Teen Titans. And thanks to the massive success of his CW Arrowverse show, he has only grown in popularity.
Because of his long and varied history, there are so many different stories that a Flash-centric game could tap into. The studio could tell the tried-and-true Flashpoint tale, his discovery of the multiverse from The Flash of Two Worlds, a gripping look at the iconic The Trial of the Flash, or simply tell his origin story. If none of that interested the studio, then it could follow in the footsteps of Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man and explore a brand-new take on the character. Whatever form it came in, there are so many stories waiting to be explored in the video game space.
A Flash Video Game Would Be a Fantastic Breath of Fresh Air for DC Fans
A Flash game could also lead to something extremely special for DC and superhero fans in general. As of now, it seems like DC’s video game side is mostly dominated by Batman tales, thanks to Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham series. While the studio did expand it immensely with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, it was still very closely connected to Batman’s own cast of characters. Outside of that, players have also recently gotten treated to Gotham Knights, which is also Batman-related. So, following The Flash would give them something entirely new.
On top of that, a game following the Scarlet Speedster would also need to deliver a whole new gameplay style, as his entire powerset is built around running fast. That means that the game would have to be fast-paced, the traversal system would have to feel extremely unique, and everything about the game would need to be unlike anything players have really seen before. As of now, the only games that have really given players an experience like that are the LEGO Batman and LEGO Marvel titles. And while those made for a fun experience, WB Montreal would still need to craft something entirely new here.
If the DC reboot is a success and Wonder Woman can hit all the right notes, then a Flash game needs to be on the table once more. The character is too interesting and unique to be left out of the spotlight. With the right developer and care put into it, it could lead to something truly special for players. Plus, it could even kick off a whole new video game series in the process.
