  • A sequel is unlikely to come any time soon, and isn’t in active development.
  • McMillen is working on Mewgenics before any new Isaac game.

Edmund McMillen, the creator of The Binding of Isaac, has commented on the possibility of a new game in the series arriving in the future. It has been over 13 years since the release of the original Binding of Isaac, and gamers are keen for more.

Nowadays, the original Binding of Isaac has been somewhat forgotten, thanks to the 2014 remake, The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth. This gave the game a more stable engine, allowing McMillen to release several expansions over the years, including Afterbirth and Repentance. Over the years, The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth has come to be regarded as one of the best roguelite games of all time, thanks to its addictive gameplay and ease of entry for those new to the genre.

The Binding Of Isaac Rebirth: Best Characters

The Binding Of Isaac offers lots of characters for players to use in their runs, and these are the best of them.

In a TikTok reply to a fan comment regarding a possible Binding of Isaac sequel, McMillen said, “I can say with certainty that there will eventually be another Isaac game.” As far as straight answers go, that is probably the best that fans could possibly hope for. Although players have had plenty of new Binding of Isaac content via the expansions to Rebirth, it would be interesting to see what ideas McMillen could develop for a full sequel. After so long since the launch of The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, it would likely have to be substantial for McMillen to consider it.

The Binding of Isaac Creator ‘Can Say With Certainty’ New Game Will Come

Following the confirmation that a new Binding of Isaac would come eventually, McMillen then put a dampener on the idea that it could arrive any time soon, stating, “I don’t know when. I would expect not for quite a few years. It’s not something that I’m working on… The chances of an Isaac-like spin-off before a full sequel, a higher probability, probably. Realistically, to do a sequel, we would need to spend many, many years on it.” In the meantime, there are plenty of roguelike games like The Binding of Isaac, but those wanting more of the real deal are set for a wait yet.

In the meantime, McMillen continues to work on his upcoming roguelike, Mewgenics, claiming in the TikTok that he plans to release the game “by the end of the year.” He hyped Mewgenics as some of his best work at the start of 2024. Given his body of work includes Super Meat Boy and The Binding of Isaac, it’s certainly a bold statement. One thing is for sure: gamers shouldn’t expect a new Isaac title in any form before Mewgenics is released.
