Old-School Game Boy Game is Getting a Remake

A modern remake of Bubble Ghost, a classic Game Boy title from 1990, is set to release soon on the Nintendo Switch and PC later this year, on March 27, bringing the unique action title to a brand-new audience. Bubble Ghost originally launched in 1987 on the Atari ST before it later received a Game Boy port in 1990, where the game received much wider attention, likely due to the popularity of the classic Nintendo platform.

The Game Boy had no shortage of unique video games of all genres, starting its lifespan with a lineup of games including the likes of Tetris before it would go on to evolve into one of the most iconic handhelds of all time. Even before Pokemon Red and Blue ignited a cultural spark that would continue to this day on the system, the Game Boy had already cemented itself as a must-have in the world of gaming.

It seems two major Final Fantasy games are making their way to the Nintendo Switch 2.

Now, an early release for the Game Boy, Bubble Ghost, is making a major comeback with a full-on remake recently unveiled by developer Nakama Game Studio, set to release on March 27 on the Nintendo Switch and PC. The remake was first announced back in 2023, but has finally received a trailer detailing some of its gameplay, which offers a unique spin on the 2D sidescroller genre.

Bubble Ghost Remake Announced in New Trailer

In Bubble Ghost Remake, players control the ghost of the long-deceased inventor Heinrich Von Schinker as they face off against his own past creations and a slew of other hazards and unique enemies to encounter. Along the way, they must maneuver a mysterious bubble across each level as the game takes a note from Yoshi’s Island, tasking players with blowing it across the stage while attempting to prevent it from popping due to dangerous traps, enemies, and other hazards.

Alongside modernized graphics and controls, the Bubble Ghost remake also offers 40 new levels in addition to the 35 that were present in the original version, and two brand-new ways to play with the new Speedrun and Challenge modes. As for the music, it is unclear how the original soundtrack, which featured work from Hitoshi Sakamoto, a longtime collaborator for the soundtracks in the Final Fantasy series, will be improved upon or expanded, if at all.

While Bubble Ghost Remake is not set to hit the Nintendo Switch eShop, Steam, and the Epic Games Store until March 27, there are still plenty of other unique sidescroller games for fans to check out in the meantime. For a more modern indie fix, Nintendo Switch and Steam users might find something to appreciate with Antonblast, which launched to rave reception from fans and critics alike.
