Summary

  • A new job listing suggests that Sega may be developing a Sonic fighting game.
  • The listing seeks devs for a ‘3D battle action game’ at Sega’s 2nd Development Division, the division responsible for the Sonic franchise.
  • A Sonic fighting game has been hinted at in the past, with a Sega/Capcom crossover teased in 2024.

According to a recent rumor, Sonic the Hedgehog fans could have a new fighting game to look forward to in the future. Everybody’s favorite blue hedgehog has experienced a major revival over the past few years, with games like Sonic X Shadow Generations and the live-action films selling well and getting a largely positive fan reception. Some think Sega will carry that momentum into some new titles, potentially including a Sonic the Hedgehog fighting game.

Several rumors have swirled around Sega and its iconic Sonic franchise lately. Fans have speculated that the company may be working on a Sonic Heroes remake or sequel with a target release of Fall 2025. The Fall Guys-esque Sonic Rumble also leaked before it received a formal announcement in 2024. It should come as no surprise, then, that fans of the series were quick to spot a small update that could provide insight into another upcoming Sonic title.

Co-op has been a staple feature of many Sonic games for decades now. These examples are the best of the bunch.

Streamer GamesCage recently shared a screenshot of a job listing on Twitter that shows Sega is hiring developers for a “3D battle action game.” While the job description does not explicitly mention Sonic, it says teams will work under Sega’s 2nd Development Division, which GamesCage pointed out is the division responsible for the Sonic franchise. The listing also likely does not refer to the recently announced Virtua Fighter revival, as it mentions experience with Unreal Engine, which the Virtua Fighter series has not run on in the past. The post also seems to be referring to a title earlier in its development cycle.

Sega Job Listing May Suggest a Sonic Fighting Game Is in Development

If Sega is indeed working on a Sonic fighting game, it would line up with earlier rumors. A former Sega employee teased a Sega and Capcom crossover in 2024, specifically mentioning Sonic the Hedgehog and Street Fighter. This earlier leak may be related to the recent job listing. Sega also recently trademarked the title Sonic Blitz, and it’s unclear so far what that refers to. It may turn out to be a new game mode or event in another Sonic title, but it could just as well be the name for the unannounced Sonic fighting game.

Alternatively, Sega could capitalize on existing crossovers or old titles. DC and Sega have announced a Justice League and Sonic crossover comic, so the companies could extend that collaboration into a new game. Sega could also bring back the Japan-exclusive Sonic the Fighters arcade game or the GBA’s Sonic Battle. Fans will have to wait for additional leaks or some official news from Sega to learn more, but an upcoming Sonic fighting game is certainly not out of the question.
