  • Lillard confirms his return and teases Stu’s role.

Some horror characters stand the test of time, including Scream‘s Stu Macher. After fans cheered over the news that Macher is reprising his role of Stu in Scream 7, Matthew Lillard briefly talked about his character at MegaCon in Orlando, Florida.

According to People, Lillard and co-star Skeet Ulrich, who played his fellow Ghostface Bily Loomis, appeared on a panel at the Orange County Convention Center and Lillard said:

“I’ve been asked literally 1,000 times a day since the first movie ended if I’m coming back. And I’m happy to report I am.”

This Smart Scream 7 Fan Theory Suggests The Horror Franchise Will Go Back To The Beginning

Scream fans have more than a few questions about Scream 7, and one fan theory takes a logical approach to the upcoming slasher sequel.

Lillard then joked about Stu’s role in the upcoming horror sequel and said:

“I come back as a fairy godmother. It’s gonna slay.”

Fans are trying to guess how Stu can come back for Scream 7, and the most burning question is whether Stu is dead or alive. Lillard’s comments are hilarious, and many fans would agree that Stu’s silly and immature energy is needed in the upcoming sequel. Whether Stu is still alive, or he is shown via flashbacks or as a spirit, Stu will help balance out some of the creepier and scarier aspects of the movie. Stu is a great reminder that no matter how dangerous, violent, and gory Ghostface is, the Scream franchise leans on its comedic moments and goofy characters. While Sidney Prescott’s (Neve Campbell) story is undeniably one of tragedy and loss, the franchise never feels melancholy. Any sad moments are always balanced out by meta jokes about the horror genre and the fight against Ghostface.

Matthew Lillard in Scream

Besides playing Stu Macher in Scream, Lillard is known for appearing in another big horror franchise. He played Steve Raglan/William Afton in Five Nights At Freddy‘s and will reprise his role in the upcoming Blumhouse sequel. Fans enjoyed seeing a pizza sign that teased Five Nights At Freddy’s 2 and look forward to seeing Lillard in the second movie. The actor also played Gus in The Life of Chuck, the upcoming Mike Flanagan adaptation of Stephen King’s short story of the same name.

Lillard is not the only beloved cast member from the Scream franchise coming back for Scream 7. Courteney Cox will reprise her role of tough and seasoned reporter Gale Weathers and Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown will play the Meeks twins Chad and Mindy again. There is no word on exactly how Stu will return, or how much of the movie Lillard will be in. Horror fans will have to be patient until February 27th, 2026, when Scream 7 is in theaters.
