Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 has a deep and varied economy, and players can benefit from understanding both buying and selling items effectively. Merchants are a valuable resource in the game, as even the most self-sufficient player will need their services. There are multiple types of merchants, from various barkeeps and food vendors, to armor vendors and scribes.

Players will have access to a number of merchants as soon as they reach the Trosky region, but there are even more in Kuttenberg, making over 60 in total. Not every item is something that should be purchased though, and not just because some items are less useful than others. There are many items in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 that just make more sense for the player to either craft themselves, or pick up freely from the environment. These are the things players should ideally never buy from merchants.

Never Buy Anything Without Haggling

Always Get The Best Price

The first thing players should know about buying items in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is that there’s always a better price available than what’s listed. Players should haggle every time they buy and sell an item, because it’s an easy-to-use system that almost always works for the player’s benefit.

When haggling, suggest a price halfway between the market price and the merchant’s offer. When the merchant counters, suggest a price halfway between the first suggestion and their new offer, and they will accept the deal nine times out of ten. Players should be aware that their reputation and appearance can affect the initial price the merchant will offer, though.

Horseshoes

Self-Sufficient Shodding

One item that players can remove from their shopping list early in the game is horseshoes. When players first learn Blacksmithing from Radovan in Tachov, they’ll be asked to make a sword. Once that’s done, the Blacksmith will also give the player recipes for axes and horseshoes. Players will spend a lot of time traveling by horse in the game, and shodding their horse themselves will save a lot of money over the course of the full game.

Fresh Food

Dry Foods Last Longer

Freshly cooked food doesn’t last long in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, and it’s really not worth buying unless the player is starving and standing in front of a food vendor. Hunting and foraging can provide plenty of meat, fruits and vegetables, and all food can be smoked or dried rather than cooked.

Dried food lasts much longer after being prepared before it spoils, so it’s much more convenient to carry around as the player explores. There’s a small trade-off in the amount of sustenance each piece of food restores when it’s dried, but that’s more than worth it to avoid worrying about getting food poisoning while out on a quest.

Repairs

Players will likely be tempted to use craftsmen to repair their gear for a lot of the early game, since they’re easily available in settlements. It makes more sense in the long run to purchase and use the game’s various repair kits, like the armorer’s kit or the bowyer’s kit, though.

Herbs

Players can simply walk out of any town and pick as many herbs as they want, and the ingredients for most of the basic alchemy potions are the most common that players will find. Players can dry their own herbs for free on a drying rack too, so there’s no need to pay for processed herbs unless the player is in a hurry.

It’s unfair to say that players should never buy lockpicks. When players first learn lockpicking, it might be the only way to get more save for the free ones they’re given. With that said, any player that wants to use lockpicks frequently should consider getting the Locksmith perk from the Craftsmanship perk tree.

Potions

Home Brew

Alchemy is one of the most useful skills in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, and players are missing out if they skip it and buy all their potions. Alchemical brews can do everything from healing the player, to providing combat buffs, to making them more charming in conversations. Alchemy is an involved process, but once players have the basics down, it’s relatively easy to obtain ingredients and brew potions without relying on merchants at all.

Mastering Alchemy and investing in the Secret of Secrets perk also lets players create “Henry” level potions, which are stronger than other variants and sell for more Groschen. These can’t be bought, so players will have to brew their own potions if they want the strongest effects. It’s worth putting time into alchemy to get to this point, and circumvent buying potions from merchants entirely.

Weapons

Master Craftsmanship

This might sound like a counter-intuitive statement, but there’s really no reason to ever buy a weapon in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. There are a couple of reasons for this, the first being that if players know where to look, there are free versions of most weapon types available, either to find in the environment or as quest rewards.

The second reason is that players can craft their own weapons, and eventually this will make stronger gear than any merchant can sell. At level 16 of the Craftsmanship perk tree, players get access to the perk “Martin’s Secret”. This lets players craft weapons that are of a higher quality than is otherwise available in the game. This renders the need to buy weapons obsolete, and is something that players should definitely consider over buying from merchants.
