Warner Bros. Games and Avalanche Software’s Hogwarts Legacy is allegedly getting a DLC sometime in 2025. The news also confirmed what fans have known for a while: Hogwarts Legacy 2 is in the works. A sequel to one of the best video game releases of 2023 is a no-brainer, but the timing for the alleged DLC seems a bit unwise.

Harry Potter fans have been asking for a DLC since the game’s release. However, many lost hope after no official communication for two years. Releasing a DLC so late, especially the very first, isn’t the norm as declining player interest is of particular concern. However, it’s not entirely unheard of either—Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty was released almost three years post-launch in September 2023, and Elden Ring: The Shadow of the Erdtree came in just over two years later in June 2024. It’s possible that Hogwarts Legacy’s rumored DLC won’t bring in the same numbers and interest as it would have earlier, but there’s still hope.

Hogwarts Legacy DLC Could Have Flown Higher With An Earlier Release

To start off, Avalanche Software hasn’t added much post-game content to Hogwarts Legacy. The exploration aspect is still there, but the best points of interest and the ones that have the most intricate details are in the castle and in Hogsmeade. Even then, things can get repetitive. Further, the story has received criticism for being rather short and lackluster.

If a DLC had been released earlier, it could have served as a balm and sustained player interest for a longer time. With every year being chock-full of new releases, keeping current fans engaged is as important as attracting new ones. This would’ve helped bolster Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions‘ reception, too.

Hogwarts Legacy mods also got a boost recently with official mod support and the Creator Kit. The modding community has already been strong, but official access to assets and developer support means that fan-made quests, characters, and cosmetics will only improve in count and charm. The odds of players receiving entirely unique content via a DLC, something that they haven’t already experienced in some form via mods (or will, soon), don’t look the best. As such, given the mods’ presence and expected content down the line, it seems unlikely that a Hogwarts Legacy DLC or Definitive Edition will make as many waves as it would have earlier.

A Hogwarts Legacy DLC May Still Give Fans What They Need

One thing to keep in mind is that Avalanche left a lot of content on the cutting room’s floor. Here’s a small list of the components that were allegedly cut from Hogwarts Legacy:

  • Companion quests
  • A morality and reputation system
  • A more fleshed-out system for acquiring and breeding pets
  • A multiplayer component
  • A dangerous, marshy area covering a decent chunk of the map
  • Salazar Slytherin’s Chamber of Secrets was likely cut too

Some of these have already been covered by mods, and in a good manner, at that. And yet, given the extended “break” and the community’s concerns over post-game content, it’s unlikely that a Hogwarts Legacy DLC will come without significant perks. Even the earlier rumors lend credence to this, having informed that fans would receive 10–15 hours of content. Things do seem a bit late, but there’s a possible reason why the timeline worked out this way.

Considering Hogwarts Legacy 2 is still a couple of years away at best, fans definitely need engagement in the meantime. The official mod support has renewed many players’ interest, paving the path for the potential DLC’s release this year. Cold-launching may have been the second unwise choice that Avalanche could have made. Further, if it is to be released in 2025, it’s good that Avalanche’s previous announcement was received positively. The Summer Update 2024 didn’t bring a lot that players considered important, and following that up without healing old wounds wouldn’t have landed well.

Overall, if a Hogwarts Legacy DLC is actually on the cards, Avalanche would be best served by taking advantage of the positive reception to official mod support. The extended timeline is longer than many fans expected, but it’s always the end result that counts—Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty is a clear example.
