Summary
- Developing for Xbox Series S helped optimize Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 for all platforms, benefiting from the console’s lower specs.
- Previous comments from Warhorse Studios claimed that the game’s scope was limited by the Series S’ hardware.
- Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 sold over a million units on its first day, and is set to receive support with free updates and paid DLC.
A member of Warhorse Studios has recently talked about the Xbox Series S during a recent interview about Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, revealing that the console’s low specs actually helped during development. This new stance is a stark contrast to previous claims made by Warhorse Studios’ developers, which said that developing for the Xbox Series S made Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 smaller than originally intended.
Released earlier this month, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 was a big hit. The medieval RPG managed to sell over a million units on its first day, making a profit in less than 24 hours. Developed by Warhorse Studios and published by Deep Silver, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 takes place during the 15th century in the Kingdom of Bohemia, and offers a historically accurate experience to players.

In a recent interview with the Iron Lords podcast, Warhorse Studios’ global PR manager, Tobias Stolz-Zwilling (AKA Sir Tobi), talked about how developing the game for the Series S was actually positive for the game’s development. According to him, “the optimizations for the Xbox Series S helped greatly the other platforms as well.” Due to the Series S being a weaker console when compared to the Series X or PlayStation 5, the devs had to be clever while programming and use it as the baseline, saving memory in several ways. Because of this, some of these optimizations also benefited other consoles.

Sir Tobi’s comments mirror something that Phil Spencer recently said about Microsoft’s weaker console during this generation. Last month, Spencer reiterated that the Xbox Series S parity was a good idea, with the executive touching on the same point: optimizing for the Series S helps to create titles that run well on multiple platforms.
These remarks contrast with what some developers from Warhorse Studios said last year about the Series S. At the time, producer Martin Klíma revealed that Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 was only roughly 25% larger than the original title due to the limitations of the Series S. As the Xbox Series S only has 10 GB of RAM, it allegedly affected the size of the RPG.
After having an excellent release, Warhorse Studios is set to keep supporting Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 on all platforms. Some weeks ago, the developer shared a roadmap for Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, which revealed that the game will have some free updates such as a Hardcore Mode coming up soon, and will be followed by three paid DLC.
