Netflix‘s latest true-crime series, American Manhunt, covered the O. J Simpson murder case, with big revelations from the key players involved in it. However, the four-part documentary series also left a lot of key information out, which adds a lot of context to what happened on the fateful night of June 12, 1994.
Former NFL running back, O. J Simpson brutally killed his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman, and it led to one of the most divisive criminal trials in history. Simpson was acquitted of the double murder, but he was found liable for the crimes in a civil trial the following year.

After O. J Simpson was found liable for the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman in a civil trial in 1996, Fred and Kim Goldman spent years trying to collect on the judgment. In the Netflix documentary, it is stated that the Brown and Goldman families didn’t collect any of that money, but that isn’t entirely accurate. O. J Simpson wrote a book called ‘If I Did It’ where he ‘hypothetically’ confessed to the murders. It was due to be released by Harper Collins, with a two-part Fox News interview with Simpson set to accompany it. However, due to the public outcry over it, the project was canceled. The Goldman family were handed the rights to the book by a Florida bankruptcy court due to the civil judgment against Simpson. They released the book and changed the name to ‘If I Did It: Confessions Of A Killer‘.
American Manhunt does cover the armed robbery O. J Simpson was sent to prison for in depth, but it doesn’t mention that the release of the ‘If I Did It’ book was a potential aggravating factor that led Simpson to commit the crime. The ex-footballer was trying to retrieve memorabilia that belonged to him in a Las Vegas hotel, and this just happened to be on the same day ‘If I Did It’ was released, with Fred and Kim Goldman appearing on television to promote it. The persistence of the Goldman family in making sure Simpson took responsibility for the murder arguably led to his incarceration in 2008.
O. J Simpson Might Have Had An Accomplice On The Night of The Murders
The evidence against O. J Simpson was overwhelming, but the LAPD never fully investigated the possibility of someone else being with him on the night of the murders. The Netflix documentary also didn’t look into this particular angle, but it is something that should at least be considered. ‘If I Did It’ was written by O. J Simpson with ghostwriter, Pablo Fuentes, and it was carefully worded to be a ‘hypothetical’ account of the murders. However, Simpson wanted to avoid taking actual responsibility for the crimes, while also providing enough information to suggest he DID do it. In the book, he mentions someone known as ‘Charlie’ who was with him when he committed the murders. Is Charlie just a figment of Simpson’s imagination? Or did the ex-footballer really have an accomplice?
William C. Deer is a private investigator who wrote a book called ‘O. J. Is Innocent and I Can Prove It‘ and he claims that it was actually O. J’s son, Jason Simpson, who committed the murders. Due to the large amount of evidence at the crime scene linking O. J Simpson to the murders, this theory isn’t logical. However, it’s quite possible Jason could have been with his father when he committed the murders, and he was the ‘Charlie’ he was referring to in his book. Another theory suggests that ‘Charlie’ could be a cocaine smuggler from the Mafia called Charles Ehrlich, who Simpson knew very well. Investigative reporter, Chris Todd wrote about this possible link in his book ‘Ron’s Revenge’.
