Summary

  • Bosch: Legacy season 3 premieres March 27, 2024, with potential for Amazon to continue the series based on fan response.
  • Bosch: Legacy gained popularity, surpassing its predecessor due to Harry Bosch’s character and engaging solo stories.
  • If Amazon revives Harry Bosch, it may rebrand it to save costs, potentially hampering its LA-based production agreement with Michael Connelly.

Bosch: Legacy will finally begin airing its third and final season on March 27, with the first four episodes set to drop on the same day. Amazon faced a huge backlash from fans when they canceled the show back in September 2024, and a petition was launched to persuade the streamer to go back on their decision. When the final season of Bosch: Legacy hits screens, Amazon might decide Harry Bosch deserves at least one more season to wrap up some loose ends.

Amazon brought the original Bosch series to an end back in 2021, but due to the popularity of Michael Connelly’s crime universe, coupled with a petition to save the show, Bosch: Legacy was launched in 2022, focusing on Bosch’s new role as a private investigator. Amazon have changed their mind about Harry Bosch once before, and there’s a chance they may do it again. Stranger things have happened.

Harry Bosch helped launch Amazon’s streaming service, Prime Video, back in 2014, and for over a decade, the ratings and the fan base have continued to grow. In fact, Bosch: Legacy is more popular than it’s predecessor, and there are two very simple reasons for that: Harry Bosch is a badass, and his solo stories are just as entertaining as they ever were. Bosch: Legacy took its titular character away from the familiar setting of the LAPD’s Hollywood Division, and thrust him into the murky world of the private sector, and the fans loved every minute of it.

Amazon are promoting the end of Harry Bosch’s solo stories as Bosch and Bosch: Legacy combined, in an attempt to get viewers to rewatch both shows in their entirety before the final season airs. If the fans do that, and Bosch: Legacy season 3 is a huge success, and it surely will be based on the upwards trajectory of the show, then who knows what Amazon might do. The high viewing figures didn’t stop Amazon canceling Bosch: Legacy, but were they really expecting such a rabid response from the fan base? Nearly 25,000 fans have signed the Save Bosch: Legacy petition, and if this continues to grow, Amazon could be convinced that Harry Bosch deserves a chance to keep knocking on doors.

If Amazon Does A Dramatic U-Turn And Brings Harry Bosch Back, It Will Probably Be Under A New Name

Adam Leipzig was the Hollywood producer who summed up why Bosch: Legacy was canceled, when the cast failed to speak out, and Amazon refused to reveal the real reasons behind their decision. On his YouTube channel, Leipzig stated:

When a show is really successful, and it’s gone on multiple seasons, every season costs more. The writers cost more, the actors cost more, production costs more and, at a certain point, it just costs so much per episode, that the network just doesn’t want to pay the money anymore.

If Amazon does decide to bring Harry Bosch back, it probably won’t be called Bosch: Legacy. They will rebrand it as something else, to save money, similarly to what they did when the original Bosch series ended, and Legacy was launched. Press the reset button, cut the cast size, and keep production costs to a minimum will be Amazon’s mantra. Michael Connelly’s contract clause demanded that production on Bosch and Bosch: Legacy remained solely in the Los Angeles area, but he also conceded that Amazon would not agree to this now.

Amazon owes everything to Michael Connelly, as the original Bosch series was its flagship show. Not to mention, in order for Hollywood to survive, productions desperately need to stay in the area. Harry Bosch’s solo stories are worth the extra production costs associated with them. Amazon must know that they will lose a huge chunk of their subscribers when Bosch: Legacy ends, and this might be the deciding factor when it comes to deciding whether to resurrect Harry Bosch. After all, it’s all about the money, right?
