Very few deities are mentioned in Love And Deepspace. In a setting that is more or less nondescript in terms of mentioned religions and major historical figures, Astra stands out as an interesting and mysterious character. Astra is one of the only gods ever mentioned in Love and Deepspace, and his importance to the story cannot be overstated.
Unlike Rafayel, a sea god, Astra is the only other deity to come up in the storyline, yet he’s never been introduced in person. Astra’s character is so shrouded in mystery because what glimpses we get of him are only through the eyes of other characters.
This article contains spoilers for the main story and many of Zayne’s memory cards.
Who Is Astra?
Astra is a god in the mythos of Love and Deepspace. It’s not exactly clear what Astra is the god of, but a few things are mentioned in the main story branches and Zayne’s memory cards, suggesting that, at the very least, Astra is omnipotent and vengeful.
Astra knows the fates of all individuals and can grant His power to his chosen, the Foreseer. He is also a wrathful god, who dislikes it when His servants rebel.
Winter punishes every wrongdoing.
However, despite setting strict instructions for his divine servants and punishing them when they fall out of line, Astra does not seem to be able to stop them from acting of their own free will. Such as when the Foreseer grants the MC, his beloved, the Creatio Protocore to save her life.
Additionally, although it cannot be ruled out that Astra is only a recognized god in Philos, there have yet to be any interactions with Astra in the prologue story of Love and Deepspace. It does not appear as though Astra is recognized as a god in Linkon.
How Is Astra Connected To Zayne?
The only time Astra enters the narrative is through the lens of Zayne’s various incarnations. Astra appears as a central character in Zayne’s myth story, Tower of Secrets.
In Tower of Secrets, Zayne is known as the Foreseer, an all-seeing prophet imbued with Astra’s power and tasked with being the emissary of Astra’s divine will.
Under Astra’s command may the Foreseer deliver His will, for that is his fate. — Philos: Tome of the Foreseer
Astra shows the full extent of his wrathful retribution when the Foreseer breaks His will and saves the MC, a girl suffering from Cryoriasis — a disease that slowly freezes a person from the inside out. By the end of the myth, it’s revealed that the Foreseer had met and fallen in love with the MC in every lifetime, only for her to ultimately die.
Astra had suppressed every memory that the Foreseer had of the MC. It’s not clear whether this was done to protect the Foreseer or keep him subservient to Astra’s will.
However, when the Foreseer learns that the MC has been his lover in every life, he defies Astra’s will and saves her using the power of the Creatio Protocore, the very magical item that Astra used to both imprison the Foreseer and grant him His power.
While not confirmed, at the end of Under Deepspace, Zayne is shown using his Evol on a glacier. Inside the glacier was an unidentified object resembling the Creatio Protocore. If this is true, Zayne may be trying to use the Creatio Protocore — and subsequently Astra’s power — to save the MC.
Astra makes a single appearance in the main story during Zayne’s Thorns Under The Moon main story branch. While Astra does not appear physically, his voice appears in the Dreamscape that Zayne is trapped in.
As Zayne is forced to endure illusions of his past traumas — an effect of the Protofield the Wanderer, Myst has trapped him in — he hears Astra warn him about getting involved with the MC.
Astra warns:
‘You shouldn’t throw yourself into danger just for her’ // ‘Seek your destiny. Only then can you be redeemed.’
While the meaning of Astra’s second remark isn’t explicitly stated, it’s implied that until Zayne concludes his involvement with the MC, he won’t earn Astra’s favor, and will be stuck suffering until the end of time.
Since destiny is absolute, it’s likely that Astra will only forgive Zayne if he comes to the particular conclusion Astra Himself desires. As Zayne has been a tool of Astra’s through multiple incarnations, this may be yet another way Astra is trying to regain his favorite disciple.
