Summary
- Yesterday, the PlayStation Network was down for more than 20 hours, which is dire for the digital and online age we live in.
- PlayStation has revealed that PSN users will get five free days of PlayStation Plus as compensation for the outage.
- Unsurprisingly, most aren’t too happy with the gift, especially considering all the free games that were given in 2011.
Following a PSN outage that nearly lasted for 24 hours, PlayStation is adding five free PlayStation Plus days for anyone already subscribed to the service.
All the way back in 2011, PlayStation had one of its darkest moments when a cyber attack caused the PlayStation Network to go offline for 23 whole days. We’ve thankfully never seen anything quite like that in the 14 years since then, but things were starting to look a little familiar yesterday.
For reasons we’re still not completely aware of, PSN was down for more than 20 hours yesterday, with users completely unable to login, play online, view the Store, and much more. Due to most games needing their licenses verified to play, the Network being down for even one day compared to 23 was a very tense time, especially with PlayStation’s lack of communication.
PSN Users Are Getting 5 Free PlayStation Plus Days After Network Outage
Mercifully, PlayStation managed to finally sort out the issues after around 21 hours of PSN being offline. Many gamers were wondering what kind of compensation they might get for such a big outage (especially on the weekend, the busiest time for most), and the studio has now confirmed what’s in store for everyone affected.
Over on Twitter, the official AskPlayStation account confirmed that PSN services have been fully recovered from an “operational issue”, suggesting it was just a fault rather than a breach of some kind. After apologising for the inconvenience, AskPlayStation revealed that all PlayStation Plus members will be getting five additional days of service for free.
The irony of giving away free days on a service that just went offline and was rendered useless for 24 hours isn’t lost on some people.
Although five free days for less than 24 hours of being offline might seem generous, it seems that most are unsurprisingly disappointed with the gift. In the comments underneath AskPlayStation’s post, many of the responses are making fun of the offer and saying that they would have preferred a free game.
Of course, almost anyone would rather have a free game than PS Plus days, but considering how long the initial PSN outage was that ended up giving players a choice between a bunch of free titles, it’s not surprising that the reward for waiting is significantly less this time.
