The PlayStation Network is back online after going down Friday evening, ending a roughly 24-hour period that left PlayStation users unable to play multiplayer games or access other online services. Given the popularity of PSN, it goes without saying that many people were affected by the lengthy outage.
Reports began to emerge on Friday, February 7, that PlayStation gamers were unable to access online features. Not long after, Sony confirmed that PSN was down, affecting everything from the PlayStation Store to any game that requires an internet connection to run. Outages are nothing new for PSN, but this has proven to be one of the longest to date, as the issues continued to persist into the following day.

Luckily, over the course of Saturday afternoon, PSN slowly began to come back online with more and more users able to log back in. And now the network has been fully restored, with PSN’s Service Status website confirming that all services are up and running once more. The AskPlayStation Twitter account further stated that users should be able to access online features without any problems, while also apologizing for any inconvenience.
PSN Back Online Following Day-Long Outage
Although this latest PSN outage is now a thing of the past, some remain critical of the handling of it. A number of comments in the AskPlayStation post highlight fans’ frustration with Sony’s lack of communication during the outage, a period which saw no substantial update from the company beyond the initial acknowledgment of the issues plaguing the network.
Not everyone was affected equally by this fiasco, of course, as gamers who primarily enjoy offline games like Astro Bot and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 could continue gaming unhindered. For fans of online multiplayer games, however, the unintended downtime meant they were effectively locked out of their favorite titles for a full day.
Depending on the games in question, the outage came at an especially bad time, as this weekend sees some notable events taking place in certain titles. This includes a double-XP event in Call of Duty, the second open beta for Monster Hunter Wilds, and the launch of Destiny 2’s new Sundered Doctrine dungeon. It remains to be seen how, or if, these events will be adjusted as a result of the outage, though it’s understandable that players are annoyed at having missed out on them to some extent.
