The PS5 was incredibly hard to find at launch and quite a few people fell foul of scammers selling them PS5 boxes without the advertised console inside. You’d think that would be a thing of the past by now with the PS5 now readily available, but apparently not as one of the weirdest PS5 came stories to date has been unfolding in India.
Reddit user u/Imcheeku shared their story on the r/India subreddit, revealing what they received instead of a PS5 when they tried to buy the current-gen console through Amazon. As you can see in the images, they claim that the PS5 box had been through the wringer by the time it made its way to them, seemingly having already been opened and repackaged using brown tape.

Imcheeku also noted that the date on the box indicated their PS5 had been manufactured more than a year prior, likely for the initial rollout of slimmer PS5s, so knew something was up. However, rather than open up the box to check if the PS5 had survived the ride, they went to Amazon to complain and demanded the console be picked up and the site issue them a refund.

When the delivery person arrived to pick up the PS5 is when things really got interesting. The Amazon employee naturally needed to check the customer wasn’t trying to scam them, and when they opened the box, they found a slightly smaller PS4 box inside. Since it must have been evident there was something inside that box too, they proceeded to keep unboxing and discovered a PS3 inside of the PS4 box that was inside of the PS5’s packaging.
Quite the surprise, not only for the delivery person but for the customer too if the story they’re telling is true. There’s a chance that they’re the ones trying to scam Amazon, of course, and that they kept the PS5 and saw a chance to get their money back while getting an old PS3 out of the house in one fell swoop. That seems like a lot of effort to go to, but so does boxing up a PS3 in a PS4 box, and then putting that PS4 box in a PS5 box, just to trick someone.
Amazon seems to think it’s the customer doing the scamming here as according to the OP, the site is withholding their refund even though the package has been returned. Since they didn’t open the box right away, it’s going to be hard to prove that’s not what happened. And here I was thinking the person who got sent a big bag of cat food in place of their console would forever be the weirdest PS5 scam story I ever covered.
