Summary

  • Scopper Gaban was a key member of the Roger Pirates, likely serving as the helmsman and fighting alongside Roger and Rayleigh.
  • Scopper’s strength was highlighted during the battle against the Whitebeard Pirates, where he fought Kozuki Oden on equal footing, impressing everyone with his power.
  • Scopper eventually settled in Elbaf after the Roger Pirates disbanded.

It is no secret that the members of the Pirate King’s crew embarked on the greatest adventure of all time, being the only people in the world to reach the final island on the Grand Line and come face to face with the mythical One Piece treasure. Because of this, every member of the Roger Pirates exists as a legend to this day who is still wanted by the World Government for billions of berries.

Even among these pirates, however, none reach the levels of strength and reverence like Gol D. Roger himself, as well as the right and left wings of the Pirate King, Rayleigh and Scopper respectively. After decades of speculation, Chapter 1139 of the One Piece manga finally revealed the latter as someone who stood shoulder to shoulder with Roger and Rayleigh, so let’s look at the journey that led Scopper to residing on Elbaf.

No pirate crew in the current setting of One Piece has had as great, or important, of an adventure as the Roger Pirates. They became known as the greatest pirate crew of all time because they were the only ones to ever find Laugh Tale and witness the truth of Joyboy’s fabled treasure, and in this journey, unlocked the truth of the world and the mysteries of the Void Century. For all of this time, Scopper was there by the Pirate King’s side.

While his exact position in the crew isn’t confirmed, he has often been shown at the helm, which pretty much confirms him as the helmsman of the Roger Pirates. This is an incredibly important role on any ship since it is the helmsman who is directly responsible for getting the crew from point A to point B on the chart set by the navigator, and it was likely he who carried his crewmates all the way to Laugh Tale as well.

I love it when trouble is caused by other people!

His exact origins are unknown, but he is confirmed to be one of the first members of the Roger Pirates since he was present during the God Valley Incident, which took place 38 years before the start of the main story of One Piece. This was one of the greatest conflicts in the entire history of the world and also one of the earliest in the careers of Gol D. Roger’s crew, and Scopper was there for all of it. His exact battles and actions during this event are unknown, but he likely helped out a ton against the many powerful enemies who were also present.

After this incident, the Roger Pirates took a chest from God Valley and found baby Shanks inside of it. Sometime after the events on this island, the Battle of Edd War took place, where the Roger Pirates fought against the armada of the equally legendary Golden Lion Shiki, which they miraculously ended up winning due to a storm that took out the majority of Shiki’s forces. As such, Gaban was present there as well.

After this came a very important moment in his journey; when the forces of Roger and Whitebeard battled against each other for 3 days straight on an unnamed island. This was the perfect representation of Scopper’s otherworldly power since, for those 3 consecutive days, he battled Kozuki Oden on equal footing, with neither letting up, ultimately ending the fight in a draw. It should be noted that Oden was strong enough to one-shot Kaido, so it really shows how much of a force to be reckoned with Scopper truly is.

After this event, Oden would join the Roger Pirates for their final tour of the world, where they eventually found all the Poneglyphs and became the first people in 800 years to reach Laugh Tale, coming face-to-face with Joyboy’s legendary treasure, which prompted them all to laugh. After that, their life as a single crew had ended, with everyone disbanding and going to their many home islands.

With the extraordinary treasure that sat there before our eyes, at that moment, Roger… was laughing!

Although the crew undoubtedly went to Elbaf, it currently remains a mystery as to when exactly this visit fits in their journey to reach the One Piece treasure. Seeing how the Straw Hats are doing on their adventure, it’s likely that the first visit of the Roger Pirates to Elbaf was made before they reached Laugh Tale. When the crew dispersed, Scopper settled down in Elbaf and seems to have been there since, for 20 years at the very least, since that’s how old his son, Colon, is. While in Elbaf, he married the Giant Ripley and started a family with her.

Scopper’s Importance To The Story

What Role Does This Man Serve?

As stated earlier, Scopper is already one of the most important characters in the franchise. So, he retains this importance thematically as well, since it is clear that he exists as a parallel to Sanji and may be indicative of what the future holds for him and the Monster Trio in general. In Chapter 1139, it is revealed that Scopper was, at the very least, incredibly relative to Roger and Rayleigh in strength, as it repeatedly stated them to be either equals or standing side by side to one another.

Moreover, he also has many of the comedic elements of Sanji’s personality, such as his unhealthy obsession with women. All these things together have made some fans think that, toward the end of the series, Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji will all be equal in terms of strength, or at the very least, in the same ballpark as one another. This is an opinion that many hold due to the statements written in Chapter 1139, but this is unlikely to be true, though it would be amazing to see.
