When playing a battle royale game like Fortnite, some parts of the map may be greyed-out. Whether a new patch has been released, a new season or a new chapter has started, the map in Fortnite is always changing and adding new areas.
We all have a place we like to land on the map, whether in the middle of a frozen tundra or an island where we can spend some time opening chests in solitude to gear up. However, there are good reasons to explore new maps in Fortnite. Just remember, at first, new areas and new maps always first appear greyed-out.
The Grey Parts Of The Map
Here’s a better look at that greyed-out area of the map in Fortnite Chapter 6 Season 1. This is an area not yet explored, and you may notice some parts of the map look like this the next time you sign in and start a new match.
It may be second nature to explore grey or shaded areas of a map for most gamers, but occasionally, someone new decides to see what the fuss is all about in Fortnite, and they may find themselves wondering if the grey area is unexplored or locked.
When To Expect A New Addition To The Map
You may have noticed the map is now colored. Upon visiting the greyed-out portion of the map, a new named location and a detailed map of the new area appear. But when should you expect new areas in Fortnite?
- New season launch – When a new island is generated, this will result in an entirely new map that’s greyed-out and unexplored.
- Mid-season updates – Throughout a season, new areas, weapons, events, and NPCs may be added or replaced.
- A new chapter – This is the big one. This does all of the above and adds to the whole big-picture story of Fortnite.
Why Explore New Areas?
When a new map or area is added, chances are some NPCs have been added or replaced. NPCs can be very helpful, known for giving free items, trading weapons for gold, and being available for hire to add one more player to your team.
New NPCs are just one good example of why exploring new maps, or the grey part of a map, is essential. Without doing so, players wouldn’t find the designated spawn points for a new weapon added to the game. Of course, you can also find these weapons in chests or when dropped from a downed foe, but spawn points are your best bet for finding a newly added weapon.
New seasons for Fortnite start every 10 weeks, and the map is sure to change again. Once you download and install the patch, start exploring grey areas on the map for new NPCs and weapons.
