Game of Thrones: Kingsroad is set in the world of Westeros and promises to include many iconic elements from the titular show. Game of Thrones: Kingsroad is being developed by NetMarble, the same studio behind other mobile titles such as Marvel: Future Fight and Ni no Kuni: Cross Worlds.

The developers have learned from these experiences to craft Game of Thrones: Kingsroad, and carrying that forward, the developers also recently concluded the game’s first closed beta test on January 22. While plenty of things could change during development, its promise of action RPG elements is no doubt a draw for Game of Thrones fans. Game Rant recently sat down with Netmarble Neo division director Hyun-il Jang to talk about the action RPG elements present in Game of Thrones: Kingsroad‘s official gameplay trailer.

Netmarble’s upcoming action-adventure RPG for mobile Game of Thrones: Kingsroad reveals new gameplay and closed beta test details.

How Developers Designed Game of Thrones: Kingsroad’s Action RPG Classes

Game of Thrones: Kingsroad is an action RPG first and foremost. Players will be able to explore Westeros as an open world, and Jang revealed a few details about some of the choices that players will be confronted with during Kingsroad‘s story. However, the game’s combat system arguably remains its biggest selling point. Kingsroad features three different classes for players to choose from, and Jang began by revealing the inspiration for each class.

“The appearance and combat styles of the three classes are inspired by original Game of Thrones characters – the Sellsword is modeled after Tormund, the Knight after Jaime, and the Assassin after Arya. However, their narrative and personality traits are entirely unique to the game’s own setting.”

All three of the playable classes are based on existing Game of Thrones characters. Some of these characters have already been teased to appear in Kingsroad‘s story, which will take place during Season 4 of Game of Thrones. It’s exciting to know that players will be able to almost embody some of these iconic characters, but Jang went on to reveal that this was not his team’s sole inspiration.

“We anticipated that most players would choose their class based solely on appearances, without any prior information. Therefore, the most important aspect at the selection stage was meeting the players’ expectations. For example, the Sellsword, with their rugged appearance, wields a massive axe, leading players to expect a slow but powerful combat style. True to this expectation, the Sellsword delivers slower but devastating attacks, excelling in dealing with larger groups of enemies.”

Kingsroad features a protagonist who is an original character in the Game of Thrones universe. Naturally, this makes a player’s first impression that much more important. After discussing the Sellsword, Jang also revealed the design intention for the Knight and the Assassin. While the Sellsword has a heavy fighting style, the Assassin focuses much more on hit-and-run tactics. Although the Knight is more balanced and somewhat basic by comparison, Jang believes this design will make the Knight appealing to beginners. Game of Thrones: Kingsroad establishes a solid separation between the three classes, which will hopefully have something for everyone upon release.
