I love the style of classic ‘90s RPGs. All the old-school Diablo, Fallout, and Baldur’s Gate games have such a delightful visual style that definitely shows its age, but still holds up because of how intentional it all looks. Everything feels grimy and rusty, but teeming with life at the same time. This is the exact presentation Halls of Torment is going for. The Vampire Survivors-inspired horde game is one of the most beloved of its kind on Steam, and now that 1.0 has been here for a while, we’ve got our first major update with plenty of free additions.
If you’ve played Vampire Survivors, you know what to expect with Halls of Torment. You choose a hero, enter the world from a top-down perspective, and demolish waves of skeletons, demons, and other monsters as the screen fills. There are loads of environments, items, bosses, abilities, weapons, and upgrades to find as you go. The game even has a 95% positive rating from over 27,000 user reviews, so you know it’s got what it takes.
Runs in Halls of Torment are also capped at 30 minutes, which is great for someone like me who just wants to often get in a few rounds of a roguelike over lunch. Unlike many games like Diablo, however, Halls of Torment goes for the late ‘90s-inspired, pre-rendered look, and this does wonders for the overall aesthetic.
Now, the latest update makes Halls of Torment even better. There are four new item types, six more artifacts, the option to upgrade abilities a third time, and even a slate of quality-of-life changes. You can enable a live DPS meter during runs, player stats can show utility values like burn and frost, and there are plenty of bug and stability fixes.
This isn’t everything coming to Halls of Torment this year, however, developer as Chasing Carrots has lots more planned. “We intend to bring more and bigger updates later this year,” the team writes. “They will consist of two parts: the first being free updates that introduce smaller features and improvements, the second being bigger paid DLC containing new maps, characters, abilities, and features. Stay tuned for more updates.”
Chasing Carrots has released the latest free Halls of Torment update alongside a sale for the main game. The game is 25% off until Thursday February 14, so you can expect to pay $4.99 / £4.11 until then. Simply head right here.
