The Witcher 3 has an extremely active modding community, with over 7,500 mod uploads and over 163 million downloads on Nexus Mods. These numbers place it among the top games on the site. While it may be a far cry from titles like Skyrim in this regard, these are very impressive numbers, considering the fact that The Witcher 3‘s REDkit modding toolkit was only released in mid-2024, nine years after the game’s original launch. This has massively improved the quality of recent mods, allowing talented modders to push the game even further than ever before.

The Witcher 3 Announces 10-Year Anniversary Concert Tour
CD Projekt Red announces a concert tour to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the highly popular open-world RPG, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
This new mod is titled Herald of the White Frost, and can currently be found on Nexus Mods by user errornoaccess. It adds a new dragon mount to the game called Unhceglia, the Herald of the White Frost, which allows players to take to the skies for the first time. Players must first defeat the dragon in combat before they’re able to summon it, which can be done during the Witcher 3 quest Through Time and Space. Alternatively, players can summon it using a new item called the Mysterious Sapphire Crystal, which can be bought from several vendors across the game.
The Witcher 3 Dragon Mount Mod, Explained
Footage of the mod in action was posted to YouTube by Rocket Man, and it looks like great fun. The combat camera is admittedly a little janky, but it definitely seems like a Witcher 3 mod that all players should install to try out at least once. Herald of the White Frost was only released on February 4 and is currently in version 1.1, so it will be cool to follow this one to see if it improves even further in the future.
While players continue to enhance The Witcher 3 with new mods, the wait continues for The Witcher 4. The game’s announcement with a flashy trailer back at The Game Awards 2024 caused waves, especially when it was confirmed that Ciri is The Witcher 4‘s protagonist. It’s going to be an exciting change for the franchise, although the game could still be a long while away yet. CD Projekt Red has yet to reveal when players can expect to play The Witcher 4, with the game only rumored to have entered full production in late 2024.
