For pirates in the world of One Piece, despite their original purpose as rewards to apprehend criminals, bounties are worn like badges of honor. For most characters in the series, having a higher bounty, instead of being a source of fear from the various forces that may hunt them down, is a proud indicator of how far they have come on their journey so far. Due to this, every new bounty increase for the Straw Hat Pirates in One Piece is always a fairly important spectacle for both Luffy and his crew, as well as fans of the series.
Since characters focus very heavily on increasing their bounty throughout the series, many fans have wondered just how high a bounty can reach. Although some official bounties have soared well into the billions, none have yet to surpass that of the Pirate King himself, Gol D. Roger. However, this may change in the near future of the series, as some characters have the potential to have a higher bounty than Roger, perhaps even reaching an amount as high as 6 billion Berries.

Roger Was The Closest Before His Death
In One Piece, the Bounty System exists both as a way to reward citizens for apprehending criminal pirates and as a way to denote the specific threat level that each pirate poses. A higher bounty, and thus a greater reward, means that the character poses a greater threat to One Piece’s World Government than a character with a low bounty. Due to this, while the Bounty System is a good indication of a character’s strength, other factors, such as possessing hidden knowledge, or messing with the wrong governmental figure, can lead to bounty increases as well.

So far, out of any One Piece character, Roger has had the highest Navy bounty out of anyone, standing at 5,564,800,000 Berries before his death. So far, no other pirate has yet to surpass this number, being incredibly far from 6 Billion Berries. Still, some pirates have come close to Shanks’s bounty of 4.048 Billion Berries being the next highest bounty of an active pirate in One Piece. Outside of this, notable characters like Blackbeard, Buggy, and Luffy currently possess bounties of 3.996 billion Berries, 3.189 billion Berries, and 3 billion Berries respectively.

While the pirate is mighty, Shanks’s bounty has remained fairly consistent and hasn’t received any considerable spikes like other characters. Still, if Shanks were to reveal certain secrets surrounding himself and his twin brother, Shamrock, to the world, he may receive another bounty increase, though it’s unlikely it would surpass 6 billion.

Instead, it seems far more likely that characters like Luffy and Blackbeard would be the ones to surpass the former Pirate King’s bounty in One Piece. Luffy and Blackbeard have both shown incredible growth throughout the series, starting from virtually nothing and eventually becoming forces that the World Government fears. For the protagonist of One Piece, Luffy, especially, surpassing 6 billion, especially at the rate his bounty has been increasing in the past, seems highly likely. However, to get there, Luffy needs to do something massive in One Piece, like taking on the World Government themselves.

Being a goofy character with a penchant for failing upwards, Buggy may inadvertently find his way into becoming the most wanted figure in One Piece’s history. Potentially, if Buggy accidentally becomes the Pirate King or finds the One Piece, a 6 billion Berry bounty may be in his future.

Even Luffy, the protagonist of the series, is still only halfway to this incredibly high number. However, with the current state of the story in One Piece’s Elbaf Arc, something big may be coming soon that could boost Luffy’s bounty higher than it’s ever been before.
