What to Expect From Sega in 2025
Sega fans have a few fun things to look forward to this year, but the publisher may be keeping a few tricks up its sleeve for bigger surprises.
Per Sega Sammy’s Q3/2024/25 fiscal year results presentation along with a report by Gamesindustry.biz, Sega’s revenue has gone down by 8%. The company’s net sales by the end of December 31, 2024 totaled at $2.1 billion, producing an operating income of $287.9 million, a 20.8% decrease year-on-year, and an ordinary income of $325.4 million, a 13.9% decrease year-on-year. Although Sega has experienced recent successes like Sonic The Hedgehog 3 premiering as a box office hit and its Entertainment Contents division ultimately saw an 88% increase in profit, it may take bigger swings to drive numbers back up soon.
Sega Takes an 8% Sales Hit
According to the recent report, Sega has pointed to its sale of Humankind developer Amplitude Studios as one of the main factors for this drop in revenue, with Sega Sammy recording a $40 million loss after Amplitude Studios shifted back towards being an independent company. Football Manager 2025 seems to have additionally contributed to these losses, with Sega canceling the project, recording it as a “loss associated with a write-down of inventory assets.” The cancelation of Football Manager 2025 was attributed to the player experience not meeting the company’s standards, showing that Sega has a strong vision in mind for what it wants out of its next games.
Although Sega has experienced some difficulties over the course of the recent fiscal year, projects like Sonic The Hedgehog 3 raking in $460 million worldwide are indicators that Sega isn’t in any big trouble. Additionally, fans are looking forward to future releases, with many expecting Sega and its subsidiary Atlus to announce Persona 6 soon. If the next Persona and Sonic games are anywhere near as popular as recent releases in their respective franchises have been, Sega may make that money back in no time.
