PlayStation Network, PSN, the online service used by Sony’s PlayStation consoles, has been offline for almost a full day (15 hours at the time of writing) and as of yet, no one knows why.
After going offline at around 4pm Pacific Time on Friday, PSN, which is used by PlayStation consoles for online gaming, access to storefronts and updates, and more, has been completely inoperable.

PSN Has Been Down Since Friday and Sony is Silent
Despite now almost 20 hours of down time, Sony is tight lipped about the cause and issues around the PSN outage. This is surprising, but perhaps could be an indication of the level and seriousness of the down time. There were no scheduled outages, and PSN went offline at perhaps the most inopportune time for a business – last thing on a Friday before a full weekend. That means vital PlayStation engineers simply might not be available to fix the problems.
That is to say, if you’re suffering with a PSN outage related issue, it’s likely not your fault or the ISP – for a change.
However, with a long period of PSN down time, we’re reminded of another outage that happened almost 14 years ago.
Those with sufficiently long memories (or if you’re old enough to have had a PS3 back then) will remember the 2011 PSN outage which lasted for 23 days. The outage which began with a three-day hacking attack, which eventually forced Sony to shut off the entire network from April 20 until May 20, 2011.
After the outage Sony issued major apologies and gifted players free games (We selected InFamous, it was the obvious choice). This happened at a time when PSN was free as well for many users, unlike the paid model we have today. As a result, we’d be surprised, and outraged if Sony doesn’t offer some kind of refund or apology after this major outage.
