Metroid Fan Shows Off Samus Aran Armor Cosplay

A Metroid fan took to social media to share a customized cosplay of Metroid series protagonist Samus Aran in her iconic Varia Suit, complete with a right arm cannon and large shoulder pads. The Metroid fan shared their handiwork on social media via a picture gallery, where they wandered around a convention in Samus’ armor suit.

First introduced in 1986’s Metroid, Samus Aran has become one of the most recognizable characters on Nintendo’s roster. Although Samus is human, she was raised by the bird-like Chozo following her family’s demise at the hands of Ridley and the Space Pirates. Samus was then infused with Chozo DNA and trained to equip the Power Suit to help her survive on harsh planets like Zebes and others throughout the Galactic Federation. Samus’ training under the Chozo and her arsenal of weapons, including the Power Bombs and various laser beam attacks, make her one of the most powerful protagonists in gaming history.

Rumor: New 2D Metroid Could Be in the Works

A new, unverified leak suggests that a brand-new 2D Metroid game could be in development at Nintendo for release at some point in 2025.

Although Samus has used several armor suits throughout the Metroid franchise, one fan paid tribute to the series’ most well-known suit of armor. On Instagram, a Metroid fan using the handle King_JohnnyVIII shared a homemade version of Samus’ Varia Suit. The pictures were taken at the Cleveland Gaming Classic fan convention, which was held in mid-September 2024. The cosplay featured a blue laser cannon on the right arm, large orange shoulder pads, a gold-painted chest piece, and Samus’ iconic visor with a blue eye guard. To make walking around a fan convention center much easier, King_JohnnyVIII wore black shoes instead of armored boots. The Instagram gallery also featured cosplays of characters such as a group of Spartans from the Halo series, a Mandalorian in Mario-inspired armor, and other convention goers.

Though tributes to Samus have been done in games like Starfield, real-world cosplays of Nintendo’s famous bounty hunter can be difficult to assemble due to the intricate parts that go into her suits. While King_JohnnyVIII originally posted the Instagram pictures over four months ago, his cosplay received some attention several months later, as comments and compliments from Metroid fans kept filing in as recently as February 7. King_JohnnyVIII stated that the Varia Suit took over two years of work to assemble, and thanked the people that helped make it possible.

With Metroid Prime 4: Beyond slated as one of Nintendo’s top 2025 game launches, gamers will soon take up the mantle of Samus Aran once again. Only time will tell if new suits or powers will be part of her upcoming adventure.
