VIZ Media announced on Friday, February 7, that Yasuhisa Hara’s epic historical manga, Kingdom, will make its long-awaited debut in English. With 110 million copies sold, the series, which is one of Japan’s most celebrated, has inspired an anime adaptation, two live-action films, and various games on PlayStation and mobile. Despite its lack of an English release until now, Kingdom has enjoyed a devoted international fan base, whose support has finally been rewarded with the debut of the manga in English for the first time ever.

The English release of the Kingdom manga is set for November 11, 2025, and the series will also join the Shōnen Jump service. The news puts to bed rumours surrounding the upcoming release that had been circulating over the last few weeks.

Yasuhisa Hara’s Magnum Opus

Kingdom, created by Yasuhisa Hara, is a historical manga series set in China’s Warring States period (circa 475 – 221 BC) and follows Xin, a war orphan from the Kingdom of Qin who dreams of becoming a powerful general who will unite China. After the death of his closest friend, Piao, under mysterious circumstances, Xin embarks on a journey to fulfill the dream they once shared. At some point on his journey, Xin meets Ying Zheng, a young king who looks a lot like Piao who needs Xin’s help to reclaim his throne and change the course of history. The manga has been running in Shueisha’s seinen magazine, Weekly Young Jump, since January 2006, and has since been collected into 74 volumes. Kingdom is one of the most successful manga of all time, and with over 110 million copies in circulation as of December 2024, it is one of the best-selling manga of all time.

In 2013, the series won the Grand Prize of the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize, the annual prize sponsored by the Asahi Shimbun awarded to manga artists or works that follow Osamu Tezuka’s approach to manga. Kingdom inspired an anime adaptation produced by Studio Pierrot (BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War) that ran for 143 episodes over five seasons, with season 1, directed by Jun Kamiya, running for 38 episodes; season 2, directed by Akira Iwanaga, for 39; seasons 3 and 4 ran for 26 episodes each, and season 5 ran for 13 episodes. Kazuya Monma directed seasons 3 and 4, and assisted on season 5 alongside Kenichi Imaizumi. The upcoming English release of the Kingdom manga will bring the series to a brand-new global audience.
