Summary
- Iron Galaxy laid off 66 employees as a last resort for long-term survival in a turbulent gaming industry.
- The studio’s focus on game ports remains strong, with plans to release The Last of Us Part 2 for PC in April 2025.
Iron Galaxy, the developer behind titles like Rumbleverse, has announced that it has laid off a total of 66 employees in different departments. The latest round of job cuts at Iron Galaxy underline turbulent times in an industry that has suffered frequent layoffs in the past few years.
Iron Galaxy is a veteran studio that opened its doors in 2008. Over its many years of existence, it has developed a host of titles, including Divekick, Extinction, and a couple of Killer Instinct seasons. Its latest original release was the ill-fated online game called Rumbleverse in 2022. Although the catalog of its own games may not be that big, Iron Galaxy’s experience of porting games to other platforms is extensive. Whether it be bringing the Batman Arkham games to new platforms or building PC versions of first-party PlayStation games like Uncharted 4, the American developer has a great deal of experience with ports. However, it will now have seemingly fewer people working on its future projects, owing to recent layoffs.

30 Years Ago, Killer Instinct’s Defensive Mechanics Revolutionized Combos in Fighting Games
Even after its reboot’s success, the original Killer Instinct stands as a testament to the innovation of its status in the 90s fighting game scene.
In its latest blog post, Iron Galaxy revealed that it had let go of 66 employees combined from the dev team and the support team. The seasoned studio called the move its “last resort” to ensure the company’s “long-term survival.” It also noted the uncertain times in the gaming industry and also pointed out the “premature sunset” experienced by its own game, Rumbleverse, a few years ago. The Killer Instinct co-developer‘s message emphasized that it had been “making sacrifices” to avoid laying off its staff until now and that a “slow recovery” forced its hand in the end.
Iron Galaxy Layoffs Come After Recent Studio Expansion
Interestingly, the job cuts at Iron Galaxy come on the heels of an expansion that saw the Chicago-based company open a new office in the US, with rumors of another on the way in the future. As recently as June 2024, the team behind Uncharted‘s PC ports established its presence in Nashville, Tennessee, adding a second studio location to its portfolio. Months before that, it was also reported that Iron Galaxy could also be eyeing Austin, Texas, for one of its offices, at some point down the line.
While there are chances that plans for adding another studio location may have changed since then, what hasn’t changed is Iron Galaxy’s focus on being a prolific producer of game ports. In fact, its next big release is The Last of Us Part 2 for PC, which is scheduled for launch in April 2025.
