Summary

  • Insomniac pitched a fourth Resistance game to PlayStation, but it was rejected due to timing and market opportunities.
  • The founder Ted Price hopes to see Resistance 4 in the future, expressing passion for continuing the story.
  • Insomniac currently focuses on Marvel and Ratchet & Clank titles, leaving little room for a Resistance revival.

Insomniac’s founder and president, Ted Price, has revealed that the studio pitched a fourth mainline entry into its Resistance series but was rejected. The Resistance series was extremely important during the early years of the PlayStation 3, but the franchise hasn’t been seen since the 2012 PlayStation Vita title, Resistance: Burning Skies.

The first game in the series, 2006’s Resistance: Fall of Man, was part of the PlayStation 3’s launch lineup, which also included Call of Duty 3 and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. Like many FPS games released around this period, it was dubbed a Halo killer, a tough title that it never quite lived up to. Even still, it proved to be a success and was followed by two mainline sequels in 2008 and 2011, respectively. After completing its Resistance trilogy, Insomniac moved on to other projects, including Sunset Overdrive and more Ratchet & Clank games.

The PS3 deserves to be remembered fondly for its extensive library of games, with some of the best titles in all of gaming featured on this console.

Speaking on the Kinda Funny Gamescast, Insomniac’s departing CEO Ted Price revealed that a pitch for Resistance 4 was taken to PlayStation by the studio, but it was eventually shot down. He said, “We did pitch that one. It was a wonderful concept, and it just… in terms of timing and market opportunities, it didn’t work out. But it was the result of a lot of Insomniac team members being passionate about extending the story further.”

Insomniac Wanted to Make Resistance 4

With Price set to leave Insomniac Games in March, host Greg Miller asked him whether he believes gamers will ever see Resistance 4 in the future, even if it’s not in the works right now. Price responded, “All I can say is… honestly, I hope so. I would love to see the story taken further, it’s near and dear to my heart, there are so many cool things about it.” Despite this, it certainly doesn’t seem as if there are any active plans to bring Resistance back at the moment.

As the Resistance games remain dormant, Insomniac remains committed to its current slate of in-development titles. Remembering back to the huge Insomniac leak in December 2023, the studio is rumored to have a large group of Marvel titles in the works at the moment, including Venom, Spider-Man 3, and the already-announced Wolverine. That’s on top of an alleged new Ratchet & Clank title, leaving any room for a Resistance revival minimal for the foreseeable future.
