Made by solo German developer Steven Kaule, Magical Delicacy is a 2D platformer that bills itself as a “metroidvania-lite.” While its level design and progression mechanics take a lot of lessons from traditional metroidvanias, Magical Delicacy puts a different spin on the popular genre by being entirely combat-free. This formula elicited a positive response from critics, as reflected in the game’s “Strong” rating on OpenCritic, based on an average score of 77 and a 50% reviewer recommendation rate. Likewise, Magical Delicacy presently boasts “Mostly Positive” user reviews on Steam.

The 30 Coziest Games on the PS5
The cozy genre has grown over the years with several new additions, and these are the best cozy games for the PS5.
Half a year following Magical Delicacy‘s original release, the game was confirmed for the latest two generations of Sony’s consoles. Its PlayStation port was announced as part of the Whitethorn Winter Showcase 2025. Publisher Whitethorn has yet to attach a concrete release date to the upcoming port, although it characterized it as “coming soon,” suggesting that Magical Delicacy will make its way to the PlayStation Store sometime in 2025.
The PC, Switch, and Xbox versions of Magical Delicacy are regularly priced at $24.99. That’s presumably how much the PlayStation port will retail for as well. PS4 and PS5 users are expected to receive the latest build of the game, which was rolled out in early November 2024. Identified by version number 1.1, this release introduced several new features, including the ability to pass time, an improved map, expanded tutorials, and another page for the Grimoire—the game’s knowledge base.
Magical Delicacy Is a Metroidvania With Cooking Instead of Combat
Although it doesn’t feature combat, Magical Delicacy isn’t all about platforming. On the contrary, the game revolves around cooking, whereas platforming only comes into play when it’s time to collect ingredients and take or deliver orders. Magical Delicacy‘s cooking system allows for the creation of everything from meals and pastries to teas and potions, and was generally designed to be extremely conducive to experimentation. The game also features some management sim mechanics, allowing players to upgrade their kitchen with new tools, rooms, and floor arrangements.
In terms of navigation, Magical Delicacy offers a metroidvania-like experience of platforming through non-linear environments while discovering shortcuts and new abilities that unlock new avenues of traversal. The game’s cozy world is rich with fantasy lore, brought to life through charming pixel art visuals.
