Summary

  • Rocksteady is said to be working on a new single-player Batman game after the commercial failure of Suicide Squad.
  • The game is still years away from being ready.
  • The upcoming Wonder Woman game is also said to have been rebooted, holding it back further.

Rocksteady could finally be returning to its strengths with another Batman game. This comes after the studio pivoted to live services for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which failed commercially and has now come to an end after four seasons.

This is being reported by Bloomberg‘s Jason Schreier, who spoke with multiple sources about the state of Warner Bros. Games. Unfortunately for fans of the various franchises under Warner Bros. belt, the report paints a picture of a directionless company that can’t quite get projects off the ground, but at the very least, it has apparently greenlit this new Batman game.

But Monolith’s Wonder Woman game was reportedly rebooted last year

In the report, Schreier writes that Rocksteady is currently “looking to return to Batman for a single-player game”. This will come as a great relief to fans of the Batman Arkham games, as many were disappointed the second it was revealed that Suicide Squad would be a live service. After that failure, it appears that the studio is allowed to return to its roots – sadly after rounds of layoffs.

We’re still said to be “years away” from getting this game, however, and we might not have too much to fill that gap with. Also mentioned in the report, Monolith’s Wonder Woman game is struggling. Despite being revealed all the way back in 2021, we may not anything from it soon, as it was reportedly rebooted last year and given a new director. According to Schreier, the game is still “years away from release, if it ever makes it to market.”

Wonder Woman is already said to have cost Warner Bros. $100 million, without much to show for it.

With this in mind, this apparent Batman game is being greenlit at a very turbulent time for Warner Bros. Games. On the one hand, it could be a sign that everything is heading in the right direction, eventually. Or, it will get held back by failures across the division, as two live services that the company was banking on to be a consistent stream of revenue are now coming to an end, with MultiVersus also on its final season. It remains to be seen if this project is real, and if it is, if it gets off the ground.
