Its hunting, crafting, and survival mechanics feel directly inspired by The Forest, but when I play Green Hell, one of the first games I think of is the best-in-series Far Cry 2. Back in 2008, Ubisoft’s FPS was a serious stomach churner – anyone who played it remembers the absolutely brutal healing animations, where you had to pull shards of shrapnel out your arm after a grenade explosion, or crack all your fingers back into place when your handgun backfired. Green Hell uses a similarly ghoulish system. Sons of the Forest is still fantastic, but if you want a solid alternative, and one with a bit more nastiness, this is definitely worth your time, especially now it’s briefly free to play.
Created by (the aptly named) Creepy Jar, Green Hell drops you in the darkest corner of the Amazonian jungle and challenges you to stay alive. The title comes from notorious horror movie Cannibal Holocaust, where a small film crew is shooting a documentary about the Amazon called, you guessed it, The Green Hell. That fact alone should set the mood for Creepy Jar’s survival game. It’s not for the faint of heart – in fact, even the stoutest of heart might struggle.
Across a 25-hour campaign, you’ll need to scrounge for supplies, live off the land (which means fighting and butchering an array of wild predators), and defend yourself from the jungle’s human inhabitants, who understandably aren’t happy that you’re chopping up their home. Eat the wrong food and you’ll become violently ill. Get into combat, and you can expect some truly lunch-loosening injuries and improvised surgery.

After almost 60,000 user reviews on Steam, Green Hell still boasts a positive rating of 86%. If you haven’t tried it before, Green Hell is completely free to play between Thursday February 6 and Monday February 10. Otherwise, try some of the best horror games, or maybe the best FPS games available right now.
